Starship WIP by richmerk Starship WIP by richmerk
Based on old Matt Jefferies sketches and the 2011 SotL picture of the ringship Enterprise, this is my interpretation of Gene Roddenberry's "Starship".

Work-In-Progress.

Built in Hexagon and Carrara. Rendered in Carrara.

For the ship, that never made an appearence,as a actual vessel in the series,it seems to lots of fans.It really should be the ship that proseeded the NX Enterprise

What a freaking cool interpretation of the infamous "Ringship Enterprise"! This would look right at home in the new Star Trek movies, or in a movie of its own. :D

Yeah, she deserves her time in the spotlight, especially with that awesome "fireball" in the core. :D

I'm late to the game here, but.... COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL! One of the nicer interpretations of Jeffries' design. The central "energy sphere" is an inspired, fresh touch! Can't wait to see you finish this one up and roll it out into some proper images.

In a way, I have you to blame for my newest obsession. [link] :) For some strange reason, the font you used at the bottom of that image triggered an intense nostalgia for that sleek futuristic styling from the 50's-70's. Like this stuff: [link] I'm starting to wonder if it's just a passing phase with me, or if this is the new direction my art has turned... :)

Maybe you're just being seduced by those old romantic visions of our future? I know I sure am ;) Our future seemed so bright and unlimited, then, whereas today most SF tends towards dystopia. If you're like me (and I bet you are), you're underlying OS is that of an optimist. Even with global warming going unchecked, the rise of corporate power, and the world's middle-class economy in a downward spiral, I still maintain hope that we'll eventually get to a better place and that pieces of the future we grew up dreaming of will finally come to pass.

On a less philosophic note, I really love 70's hardware design. Heck, it's the decade that brought us the Millenium Falcon! ;) But more importantly, it's design work from the likes of Ron Cobb and Syd Mead that define it for me. That's one reason I enjoyed "Moon" so much. The design was a great step back to small SF films of the 70's.

Be it a new direction or a phase, I'm eager to see where it leads you, Rich!

Yeah, too bad they never got around to turning this concept into an actual series. It would have been great.

Excellent realisation of those early sketches. I like the scaling on this one, the declaration class wouldn't even cut the mustard as a scoutship much less a passenger liner it was so small, this has a more massive feel to it.
