Gene Roddenberry's STARSHIP

At least my interpretation of it. :) I wanted to make it a "starship" in a more literal sense, so I put something that looks like a tiny star at its heart.

Starship built in Hexagon and Carrara, rendered in Carrara. Planet texture by Hameed [link] rendered in Carrara. Background created using Glitterato and NASA photos. Composited in Paintshop Pro 10.

Whew...when I saw the thumbnail I thought "Is that a Trek ring ship exploding?!" Cool idea, now that's what I'd call magnetic containment!

From what little I was able to find on the internet, it might have been too highbrow. But with the current trend towards green movements, a show with a "save the planet before it's too late" message might be able to fly today.

Oooooo. Ahhhhhhh. Really beautiful. Perfect sense of power, mystery, and high-tech future optimism. A perfect homage to what was (sadly) re-crafted to become Andromeda. If only this one had sold back when Roddenberry could have helmed it.

Looks like a big badass fusion core in its "heart". Sweet job!

Truly great work man.

Just one little problem. How does the bow section conect to the stern with the "star" in the way?

Thanks. :) You can't see everything from this angle, but all the parts have at least a flimsy connection to each other, though much too thin to actually be structural. The ship is held together by an application of Clarke's Third Law. :)

I love how the lights and everything work together. The core also has a great looking texture, almost feels like a small dimmed down sun

Thanks. The details haven't been worked out yet, so I've been calling it either a "miniature artificial supernova" or a "beryllium sphere" :) Obviously it isn't an actual star, but I wanted to convey the feeling of incredible energy.

I like the star at the ship's core. Must provide unlimited power.

The star reminds me of the Magog Ship from another of Gene's shows, Andromeda. Still awesome.

Yeah, you're right, it does. I knew it reminded me of something but I couldn't think what. When I was doing research on "Starship", I came across lots of references to all the other GR series concepts, and they seemed to mix and match ideas pretty freely between them all. Which is why that Dylan Hunt guy kept showing up. :)

You're most welcome.
It's a fantastic interpretation of Matt Jeffries design.

I'm actually jealous, which doesn't happen often. ;)
