A concept I had floating around in my head for a while. A dark, gritty medieval city.

What I can say... your art to me is FANTASTIC!

I can see you've used digital painting combined with actual photos of people and it all blends in wonderfully... there's a sense of a vivid place filled with human voices, clanking of metal, splashing of water... There is so much to see, yet so much more to imagine while looking at this piece.

Yet, a minor complaint must be added: the redheaded woman in the front stands out. It feels as if she's the only element that didn't blend in. This is not me saying she shouldn't be there, just pointing out a detail that could look better with a little tweaking. ;)

Once again, great job; I'm still looking at the scene you've built. :)

Hello Rhys Griffiths, I'm a writer and would love to use this image on the cover of a book, allows me? (with credits of course)

The girl in the front looks so real. For me, she makes the whole piece feel like I'm right there, at the harbor. So cool!

H... Crap man, it's true I haven't post anything, I have a few unfinished stuff, hmmm, man your work is impeccable, ....

Haha maybe time to finish some off then ;) Feel free to run anything past me if you want some feedback or advice!
And thanks. I'm trying to improve so I can work on some blockbuster films or AAA games. It's so damn tough to break in though... seriously... insanely difficult.

I love this SO much.  If I went back to school it would be so I could learn to create this! So much detail and perspective.  The lighting is great, too.  I feel like I'm in one of my books! Thank you for sharing!!!

Haha school won't teach you how to do this unfortunately, unless you go to the famous Art Center in Pasadena. But you can teach yourself like I did, if you're determined :)

I could probably come close with the buildings now, but no way with all the detail and people...My heart always lands on plants, animals and water life anyways.  Maybe I should work on some kind of organic city half under water..."inspired"!

Go for it! Don't just think about it.. do it ;) You'll be proud of it when it's done. Collect some photo references.. draw out your perspective grid, and the rest will be easy ;) Show me when you finish!

That's really awsome ! It's weird because it made me think of an indian city near the Ganges. It doesn't look like it per say but the global feeling you know ?
RhysGriffiths's avatar
Yes it was inspired by Varanasi :)
