Never be envious of other people's work, learn from them, inspire to be as good or better than them, no matter what the canvas or materials are made of, express what burns in your mind and invite others to sample it. You are a collective memory bank that is capable of twisting and manipulating events that distorts reality, it's great to produce perfect-looking pieces, but they do not speak to others as well as works that show emotion in the mark-making, and always use references to guide you!. What's important is that you do not lose focus, do not lose hope and eventually, it will all pay off, if you are passionate about something, you're going to have to work hard to reach it.

  • I'm an adviser for DeviantArt.
My goal was never to draw photo-realistic art, in fact I just wanted to create works that just looked nice to look at, so when I got to the stage where I was able to draw pretty good works and then I wondered how far could I push myself, so I started to study how other artists drew their works and I learnt quite a bit, once I did manage to create realistic art, I started to fall-back because I reached my goal so no longer wanted to follow that rout, so now I just draw whatever I can in any style/detail I want.

As for where to start.. well, just draw just about anything, get to know your environment, it's really important to draw from things around you in 3d and translate that into 2d, it teaches you to understand your spacial awareness, it doesn't matter how badly you suck at drawing, the point is that you have made an effort, a conscious attempt at creating something, the more you draw, the better you'll become, although you won't see a difference each day you draw.. but I guarantee you that if you keep at the drawing and push yourself each time.. each year that passes you'll notice the difference.

Drawing should not be a comfy chair to sit on, it should be done standing up, your mind should be uncomfortable at first, this is because your brain has never worked in this area before, by drawing continuously, new neurons rip open new paths enabling you to access parts of your brain that is dormant, the more you draw, the larger that part grows.. ultimately, you need to stay aware, stay focused, learn to listen to fellow artists, learn to observe their mark-making, learn to drop your ego and to admit that your work needs improving, a good artist is NEVER satisfied with their last work, they may feel it's 'good enough' but each work teaches you something new

final thoughts; just go to your local museums, get close to a painting and study the brush-strokes, smell them, experiment with paints/pencils, watch tutorial videos, join art groups, but the most important of all, just draw something, you'll know how to draw realistic art in the future if you apply yourself, if you know your shit, you don't need to trace from photos, your mind knows where everything goes.

If you learn all of this without going to university, don't waste your money going to one for art, almost nobody who looks for artists to commission from needs to see a qualification..
The only time you need an art degree is if you plan on teaching, don't believe the hype that creative qualifications gets you places, it almost never does, people seek raw skill, that alone with get you places. use that money instead.. on renting a cheap studio or buying art materials.

Believe it or not, some artists such as myself are not rich, so any donation is greatly appreciated and will help me buy art materials etc to further my work.
