Dijabringabeeralong Pub by rhianimated Dijabringabeeralong Pub by rhianimated
My first finished illustration from Terry Pratchett's The Last Continent; the town pub in Dijabringabeeralong, Fourecks.

Good grief, this took me ages! There are still a lot of things I'd like to refine or change, but this'll do for now, no worries.

I didn't actually go back and reread this passage before doing this, so I've probably put some incorrect things in there, but I tried to fill it with as much other random Australiana as possible, from my limited knowledge of Australian country pubs (which tells me that folk-singers are mandatory). I liked the book's description of the animals in the pub too, so I tried to include some of the well-known ones, including my favourite, the Tassie Tiger. If you zoom in, the picture of the kangaroo on the ROOBEER poster is grinning evilly at Rincewind. It still doesn't feel as dusty and crowded and hot and smelling-of-beer as I would like, but other than that I'm quite happy with the outcome :)

Comments/criticisms/suggestions welcome! I'm intending to do as many illustrations from the novel as I can get around to, and am interested in everyone's opinion on this type of style - not that they need to be all in this style (which is what I consider my deafult), but some consistency in the look of it would be nice!

Inked in Toonboom (ah, my dearest vector - I will never ink anything in PS again, Hurrah!), and coloured in Photoshop.

Note: Big Picture, but please view full-size if you want to see all the little bits of detail!

Discworld content belongs to Terry Pratchett, art by me.

[EDIT: I buggered up, and originally had this titled 'Bugarup Pub'. In glancing through the chapter again however, to my horror, I realised I had mixed the town names up. SHAME.]

I love the way you give shape to the postures and the facial expressions of the figures. Excellent work :)

Very good work, it's hard for drawings to capture the pictures you form in your mind when you read the story, but this had done it excellently.  I like the militant wombat in the back, that picks a fight with Rincewind later, only to learn that you 'shouldn't bring a knife to a crossbow fight'.

I love this. Pratchett plus memories of a trip to Oz - and your interpretation captures everything perfectly!

I think that Rincewind And Dongo ( the crocodile) have have a chat that goes something like this?
Rincewind: So what do they call you?
The Crocodile: They call me Crocodile, Crocodile.
Rincewind: oh?, Isn't there any thing else, anybody calls you?
Crocodile: I got a Nickname, Dongo.

This is just... too perfect. Love the colors, the playful design of the patrons, the background... but most of all I love that spider on the snack bowl. WONDERFUL.

"Oh," the dwarf said, tossing his knife behind him, "If that's the game we're playing, then this here's a crossbow."

I know, not the exact quote, but still.

Fmanchch Featured By Owner Oct 11, 2012
Im pretty sure MAD the dwarf was talking to some animal man that was threatening a drunk rincewind
Sparkus-Clark Featured By Owner Oct 13, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Yes, exactly. And it was a giant walabee-man if I recall.
Fmanchch Featured By Owner Oct 14, 2012
Yea And they started a knife fight and the Wallabe got out what would of being considered a sword in some one elses hands or some thing
Sparkus-Clark Featured By Owner Oct 15, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Exactly! Which is when Mad ups it by pulling out his crossbow.

I really need to read that again.

AWESOME! You should do the pub with all the undead in it too! I can't remember the name....(I don't own the books, I borrow them intermittely from the local library, and admittedly, the list they have is spotty on a good day)... But it was in the book where the golems attempted to make a golem of their own, but it ended up killing people... The book was called 'Feet of Clay', but blast if I can't remember the name of the pub itself.

Despite the surreal atmosphere, Rincewind actually had quite a good time here, better than at the Mended Drum in Ankh-Morpork(in that city, the only time a guy would buy you a beer was if it was laced with pieces of glass).

Terry Pratchett would've been very impressed with your artworks. So much attention to detail, it almost felt like the viewer IS in the pub itself. Excellent.

OMG i love this pic! Apart from the fact you got rincewind just right, the detail adn lighting is brilliant and the animals are too. I really can't find anything wrong with it. I've been using this as my PC background for the last 2 years till my dad changed it back to a potter's wheel  ;)

I love all the little bitty details you managed to fit in here, especially the shells on Rinso's hat. The lighting is very well done, especially on the faces.

I just finished this book today. I think it might be my favorite of the Rincewind novels. Maybe.

I'm Australian, however, and my friend told me that some of the stereotypes might annoy me... Still, either way, this is fantastic. You've captured the atmosphere of a dingy old pub quite well.

This is awesome! I love your Rincewind, since you actually get him 'right' - no diea why everyone else except Kidby seems to want to make him look so old. And I've never been to an Australian country pub, but this is how I shall forever picture them in my mind.
