How would you feel if you draw gift art for an artist you highly admire but they only end up giving you a bad critique about the parts you can improve on with just a small thanks in the end?

Well, a person that acts like this deserve to be unwatched.
I mean... a gift is a gift: you can't criticize it in front of everyone!
At least, not without a proper reason, but it's a sign of really bad taste anyway

I would never criticize a gift art. That's a gift and I'd be happy of it, not matter errors. But this is me X'D
There would be other occasions for critiques X)

If that happened to me ... well, dunno what I may think XP

I'm pretty confident with my art, I know it's not stellar quality but I know I can make something cute and make someone smile and have fun doing it, so something like that wouldn't mean much to me, I'd just be like "wow okay rude?"

But I gotta say when I was starting out if somebody did that to me I would have been crushed. So more than I wouldn't like it if somebody did it to me, I think no popular artist should do it to people starting out that look up to them.

I think there's a difference between insulting someone's drawing abilities and calling it a critique.
It's not critique if all they tell me is what was wrong, but not telling me how I could potentially fix it and get better over time (This could be wrong but that's just me).
Because then I'm just left feeling stumped knowing my favorite artist thinks I basically suck at drawing, instead of knowing the tools to get better at my art and surprise them next time with my improvement :D

To be honest if that happened to me I'd unwatch them and delete the art. That would be so rude. Like, this person took time out of their day to draw you something that they're proud of and you just crap on them? Lord I'd be pretty angry. I'm all for advice but doing it like that is wrong.

It's never happened to you plan on doing it to someone? lol
I think that would seem like they are trying to help, but in the end it was a gift and not something you were asking for a redline.

Oh no, I would never do that to anyone X'D I'm just curious mainly because I have a few friends that I might want to gift some day but they are harsh critiquers and I'm not like Yuumei or any of the just amazing 11/10 artists on here so I uh... thinking about it :'D
WynterrX Featured By Owner May 9, 2015
if they did that, they wouldnt even be an "artist i highly admire" anymore
personality plays a big role in idols and, unless you asked for a harsh critique, that's just plain mean UvU

"The head is a little too big and the fur is too choppy. The lighting looks very odd too, plus you really need to improve on your anatomy and shading. But thanks for the gift anyway!"

Something like that or worse :'D Never happened to me but I'm just curious.

well, it would depend on how they worded their 'critique'

If it's like your example then I'd be super hurt like "wow okay jut rip right through this one drawing that I did for you here let me take my own heart outta my chest first so you can stomp on that too"

after that initial hurt, I know it's gonna take me some time to get over that but I'll most likely take their 'advice' and work on my art skills for later
but its not only that. What if the artist had a bad day themselves *just nothing going right, everything's needing a restart several times over, etc.* and they weren't really thinking when they typed their 'critique'? I always think about the bigger picture uvu;

O8 Never thought of that! Maybe if they were having a bad day, they'll probably come back and write another nicer comment and apologize about their comment before :'D
A bad day can make anyone grumpy ;v;

I would Kinda feel...weird? xD I mean they can give constructive critique of course, but I personally would like some small advice HOW to do it better, then xD
Because just telling someone the for example anatomical mistakes is kinda rude I think and not necessary. But then there is the question of 'when is it a mistake and when is it personal style' ...

If they notice a mistake on their character on the other side I will fix it if possible of course (at least its their char and they have the right to tell if I have done a mistake or stuff) and remember that in chase of drawing that char again one time c:
