Sleep Paralysis by RevolverWinds Sleep Paralysis by RevolverWinds
Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon wherein a dreamer awakens temporarily unable to move or speak. The feeling of a maleficent presence accompanies the experience and "hallucinations" of baleful entities pressing their chest or bedside are common. It is believed that the phenomenon occurs with 20% to 60% of people, depending on the population inspected. Sleep paralysis is peculiar from night terrors as the subject is completely conscious during the event.

Despite it's sterile rationalization by the medical community, the mechanisms behind sleep paralysis remain largely unexplained. Folk traditions worldwide acknowledge sleep paralysis as having supernatural origins and refer to it under less clinical terminology:

* In African culture, isolated sleep paralysis is commonly referred to as "the witch riding your back.

* In Hmong culture, sleep paralysis describes an experience called "dab tsog" or "crushing demon.

* In Vietnamese culture, sleep paralysis is referred to as "ma đč", meaning "held down by a ghost" or "bóng đč", meaning "held down by a shadow".

* In Chinese culture, sleep paralysis is widely known as (pinyin: guǐ yā shēn) or (pinyin: guǐ yā chuáng), which literally translate into "ghost pressing on body" or "ghost pressing on bed."

* In Japanese culture, sleep paralysis is referred to as kanashibari literally "bound or fastened in metal," from kane "metal" and shibaru" to bind, to tie, to fasten").

* In Hungarian folk culture sleep paralysis is called "lidércnyomás" ("lidérc pressing") and can be attributed to a number of supernatural entities like "lidérc" (wraith), "boszorkány" (witch), "tündér" (fairy) or "ördögszerető" (demon lover).[24] The word "boszorkány" itself stems from the Turkish root "bas-", meaning "to press.

* In Iceland folk culture sleep paralysis is generally called having a "Mara". A goblin or a succubus.

Throughout my life I have experienced permutations of sleep paralysis hundreds of times, often multiple times a night.
The bizarre content of these episodes has often lead me to wonder on the nature of our world.

I think Fuseli must have invented this concept and cursed the human population with it  Great work as always here, I enjoy the "un-glued" look on the left side.
Like a lot of the commenters here, I've also experienced sleep paralysis a few times, so it's great to see the information you have on it here

I've had them too.  Had a bit of experimentation with E when in London in the 90's - only had it a total of 5 times, but sleep paralysis started shortly thereafter and continued on and off for a couple of years after not taking anything.  Little was known about the side effects of E back then, but this has now come out as a common side effect.

Interestingly, I had nothing for well over a decade, but in the last year I've had three instances of it recurring.  This is despite leading a drug free life.

Hello, First thank you it is beautifully done. I suffer from narcolepsy/ cataplexy and have what I call split screen sometimes. I was recently diagnosed with systemic sclerosis and am now home-bound. My  real name is Monday. I am new to this sight. I hope this isn't a dumb question but I would rather ask because this piece really affected me. I wanted to ask If I could use this art and what you have written on a blog I am just learning how to do... I would of course provide your information with it so other people could find and experience your work. Thank you regardless, This is beautiful and interesting.

i am terribly afraid of sleep paralysis. sooooo scared, yet sooooo interested. im starting to get over it tho. i recently had a day dream (my day dreams r about as vivid as my night ones) where i went into leep paralysis, but i kept calm, and i ended up laying there with a beautiful siamese cat. i love cats with 99.9 percent of my heart, and i want one more than anything in the world... but i cant have one b/c me bro is allergic... so now i am less scared, because i think that i might see a simese cat. what does sleep paralysis feel like? how realistic are the halucinations? im curious.

Can I use this piece as art to accompany a short story collection I'm selling as an e-book? There are three short stories, and the theme is sleep and dreams. I'll provide appropriate links.
Thank you for your consideration.
RevolverWinds Featured By Owner Aug 28, 2012
Certainly, so long as I'm credited and you can source the prementioned links. Thank you for asking. Best luck.

The self-realization, by our minds, that we are only just a puppet to the whims of our bodies is a truly visceral and terrifying experience. Even after having experienced this several times, my heart will be racing after the event. I like your concept here with the ghostly hands, lurking malevolently; however I don't feel that you've captured the terror of the experience completely. This is largely due to the expression on the woman's face. She appears too peaceful. Helplessly, staring eyes, or some kind of expression of distress would better convey the essence of the experience better.

I like the positioning of the hand at her shoulder pinning her arm down. Something in the combination of her straight armed pose and the hand's positioning seems to evoke the sense of restraint. Also the curled tail of the hand helps to crowd the arm, restricting the space available for movement. I would have liked to have seen more contact by the other hands with either the girl's head or arm to really underline the helplessness of the feeling.

I've experienced this more than 10 times already, but didn't know what is it really till yesterday by a coincidence, it's really terrifying : \ . but after i know what is it actually, it won't be that scary anymore. :D

This is really cool. The background information is interesting. My name is Mara so it's weird that I have the same name as some of these creatures from myths, but it's cool to learn about. Wonderful art!

I experienced this twice, and it's kinda scary because I was alone in the house the first time it happened, and on the second time, everyone in the house was asleep.

I was feeling sleepy this afternoon but after reading about this, I guess I won't be taking a nap for a while. *A*

sorry for the tangent but...
many fear what they do not understand in the heat of the moment.
even the brave can be scared in that moment.
i feared what i did not understand after my first occurrence at 17 years old..
6 sequential months every other night/ morning of events i don't care to elaborate (not to be sensational, but the paralysis while awake part is but a part of the experience for some unfortunate people).
it wasn't until later that i replaced fear with patience towards what i did not understand
bizarre is good adjective, but underwhelming.
i believe medical explanation for HOW it happens physiologically, but there is no WHY in the diagnosis.
is it so farfetched that the 'terror' one 'feels' is due to the causation of some unseen hand? no
is it easy to presume all sorts of explanations? yes
if you go through this, be calm, patient, & share with someone worthy of trust about your experience.

oh, stunning interpretation, great composition.
and good research as well, some of those folkloric interpretations i didn´t knew.
i have heard a different term on my family´s lore though (yes, i have these occurances, as much as i can remember). the therm i heard was either "being found by the black hands" and "being strangled by the shadow hands" i don´t know the origin though, haven´t found this exact definition anywhere outside my family.

do you twitch before you sleep?
that is your brain shutting off your body movements
*else you would act out your dreams all over the place haha
sleep paralysis = body wakes up before the brain switched on the body again
know that it will pass and focus on breathing
it is common
you are not alone : )

In Arabic culture it is known as Yathoum or Jathoum which is a type of Jinn, I honestly don't think it's just sleep paralysis

I know how you feel. I have chronic sleep paralysis. "Experts" say that good sleeping habits and other things can get rid of sleep paralysis. They are wrong. It all depends on the person. Anyways, I like how the collage depicts this mysterious condition.

I had sleep paralysis once and recognized it for what it was...
It was like I was trapped in my own body, a weird limbo of conciousness... Especially when I could see my room around me almost 360 but couldn't interact with anything...
