For those of you who don't know anything about it, here's the premise of Adventures of a Red Book:
  • Work an entire month on an animation.
  • No pressuring myself about time or execution.
  • Have fun.
  • Once the month is over
    • Post all of the animation of the month. All will be licensed as CC-BY.
    • Start with the next part of the animation, which begins were the last animation ended.
  • The main character of the series will be a flying red book. All will be pretty minimalist, because I can't invest that much time and also my skills are bad enough as it is.
  • Once I have finished the series (no idea when that will be, see what I need to do below), compile it into a minutes long (!) animation and upload it to YouTube. It should be enough for 720p.

I had no idea how to do the title animation properly until it was almost too late. All other ideas I had were way too complex and it would have taken me longer than a month. Additionally, February was just awful as far as time was concerned.
Finally, with one week left in February, I recalled this animation that I did long ago and I went with it and accidentally created way too many frames.
And then, I had something like 500 frames to edit... and that took me another week. There still are some mistakes in there, but I really can't be bothered to fix them.
Anyway, because there are a lot of frames in this GIF, I decided to publish two versions of it. This one, the main version, is only 480p so that hopefully, it doesn't lag. The final product in 720p HD can be viewed in my Scraps.

Hello! I'm a random person from :iconprojectcomment:, here to attempt to give you some feedback!

This is one of the smoothest animations I've seen in a while. And it was done in a month?! Clap This is really good!

Dot Bullet (Green) - F2U! I really like the falling paper and how realistic it is. There's obviously been a ton of work and research put into how they float in the wind so it looks that nice.
Dot Bullet (Green) - F2U! I also really like how the 'A' and 'Red Book' are highlighted and spell out 'A Red Book'. Because this is an adventure about a red book and not a blue one. It's a nice touch. :)

Things maybe to improve:
Dot Bullet (Black) - F2U! There seems to be a few frame glitches here or there, but that could just be on my end. It also seems to be pretty jumpy when the text slides out of the frame.
Dot Bullet (Black) - F2U! It's a bit slow to uncover everything, and because of this is a little hard to stay interested all the way through. Perhaps speeding up the animation a bit could hold audience focus better? Or perhaps revealing more of the letters with each paper.... floaty-around-the-screen thingy? I'm professional, I know.

I think that's it from me. Hope it's helped (at least a little bit). I look forward to seeing more from you!

Thank you for your comment!

There was work. But there was no research. I have done this kind of animation before, though, and that definitely helped.

Thank you! The typography was something that was rather important to me.

Given that there are over 500 frames, glitches are to be expected, even with the optimisation and the resizing. As far as I know, there aren't any glitches. I might be wrong, but I went over everything trice.
The text sliding out of the frame is something that I'll have to correct. There is a slight irregularity (although not as big as your comment seems to suggest).

Yup. Working on it!

Thank you again. This certainly helps me to concentrate on certain aspects that  I need to fix.

The paper falling is really hypnotizing. Confused But yeah, practice beforehand would put your skill up, huh? xD

You are very welcome. :D And yeah, animations don't like to co-operate at times, even if you ask nicely after taking them out to dinner.

I have an issue where I don't word very well sometimes, so there'll sometimes be well, times where I completely forget how to English. Then I'll go with the next-best option in my brain vocabulary. Oops...  Sorry about that!

You're welcome for the outside opinion! I wish you luck on your quest of animation!

No, no, that was totally fine!

Hi there, I'm here from :iconprojectcomment:!

This is a really cool animation, and works very well as a title screen. As you have said it is very minimalist, but then I think this works really well considering the topic that you've described. It also works very well with 'First Flight' in terms of fluidity.

The animation seems quite smooth overall - there were a couple of very slight pauses throughout but not too many, and that may have just been my PC playing up (it does that a lot!). I also really like how the end stitches seamlessly into the beginning, and so it can keep playing on a loop. Something else I think is really cool is that the title screen isn't the first slide - I really like this approach with animations and I think it will look great within the finished piece.

I like how you've chosen the book to fly over the letters to reveal them (there's something really cool about flying books, right?). I think perhaps it might be a little bit too slow in pace - I don't think the book should be sped up, as it's the exact speed I think it should be, but rather it might work better if the book is revealing more of the lettering each time it flies over. It might work fine anyway when the whole thing is put together, but it's just a thought. I'd be interested to view the whole piece when it's done!

One more suggestion for improvement: I think the way the text slides off screen is nice, but I'd like to see you try having the letters falling off page several at a time. I think this could work really well as it links the letters to being like pages in a book, which would fit your overall theme. It would also be a slower pace, which I think would really suit the pace of the flying book.

Anyway it's really cool, and it definitely makes me want to watch the rest! :)

Thank you so much!

This is not unlikely, not because your PC isn't good enough to handle it, but because over 500 frames is simply too much for a GIF.

I'm in the process of combining several sheets falling at the same time, thus reducing the total time of the animation significantly. It's going to take me a while, but it'll fit into the video as a whole a lot better, after all, I can't have it be half of the animation!
Oh, and it's not a book, these are (supposed to be) sheets of paper falling down.

That does sound good and I'll think about it. I have to fix the sliding part anyway.

I'm glad I could interest you enough to make you watch two segments! I just hope I can keep this up. =)

Immerhin hast du was gemacht.

Ach - untr Druck kommt manchmal echt was tlles rum. ;P

Thank you! I like the idea of animated transitions. I don't see it too often (and when I do, it's cheaply done most of the time).

I like the paper floating animation, I could have sped it up so that the reveal has a little more impact through.

Good job overall

Thanks.

What do you mean, speed it up? I thought this was rather fast already. I mean, it would be easy to make this faster, I'd just have to adjust the frame rate. Simple editing. I might have thought that there aren't enough frames here, making it less smooth than it could be... (there are a lot of frames here, though).

Also, while I would love having an impact, this was more a (really long) transition between the last scene and the title. I didn't really go for a big reveal here.

It's buttery smooth, and yes, increasing frame rates would fix the speed for sure. I guess I wasn't judging it properly in the context or I didn't understand the context or audience.

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound harsh, I just had trouble explaining what I meant.
Audience. =D I don't really have one. =)

But if it's smooth already, do I really want to make it go faster? Just for a better reveal? I'm very biased here and my main concern is: Do the sheets fall OK? Making it faster could both make it look weird and sped up and make it hard to register what's going on. What do you think? I'd really like to know your thoughts.
