Daily64 - Rotating Book
1.1K Views|1 Today
I challenge myself to do one sketch every day. Learn more about it here!
<<First | <Previous | Next>

This is based on day 54's sketch Daily54 - Rotating Book WIP 1 by RetSamys I made with :iconcreatoon: (a WIP can be seen here). It took me some time (three days, to be exact) to get the full 360° rotation, but now here it is!

This animation has 60 frames. It should take exactly 6 seconds for one full rotation.

Tell me what you think and what kind of thing you'd like to see in the future.

Oh. Wow, you could say your comments... came full circle!!! =D 8-)
You must have gone through all of my Gallery. Or More Like This is more accurate than I thought.

I liked tracing the rotation and I'm hoping for another idea to make the concept into something more usable. Although I might find an occasion to use this as a flip-book next to page numbers. =) But with 60 frames, I would need to fill at least 120 pages. Maybe it's good enough to have only half of the rotation. And maybe only half the frame rate. Which leaves me with 30 pages...

Wow, that´s a great animation! :D
You seem to work pretty well with 3D objects, nice!
It does have a couple inconsistencies (like in the space between the cover and the bulk of pages, but it´s pretty easy to fix it)

Other than that, it´s cool gif. As I always say, the more frames, the better!

Haha, thanks, but actually, I don't. I mean, look at how I constructed that thing: Daily54 - Rotating Book WIP 1 by RetSamys
Inconsistencies? You mean the wiggling and wobbling that comes with this style of animation?

I know you'd like critique, but I find nothing to critique, personally. The rotation is nigh perfect; it could be a bit smoother (perhaps if it rotated somewhat faster?), but it looks and feels like an open book seen from all angles. I could keep watching it spin XD

Do you intend on making more variations of this?

Thank you. Yeah, there's not a lot I could do wrong here.
It actually could be smoother - either by rotating it faster - well spotted - or by adding more frames. It's just a matter of how much time I want to invest.

I didn't really intend making more variations of this particular book (unless someone asked me, I still have the source files somewhere and I could do it from all sorts of angles, up and down maybe).

hello! I'm Julia, and today I'm here with ProjectComment

overall, your piece is very well done, I only have two main suggestions to offer!

the book shape is indicated nicely and simplistically, with a clear understanding of shape and perspective! good work!

firstly, and this is just a quick fix, I would suggest you make the background transparent, I feel like that would just flow more nicely.

secondly, I would suggest you increase the framerate slightly, as I can sort of see when it jumps from frame to frame.

but besides those little things, I think this is really quite excellent! well done!

Thank you, Julia!

It's not that quick a fix. The lineart was put over a solid colour, I'd have to add the inner background or remove the outer background. But mostly, I didn't do that (and I totally would do that otherwise) because of the inability of the GIF to display semi-transparent pixels. This will create weird pixely margins.
Also, it won't optimise as well, making the animation both bigger and lag more.
secondly, I would suggest you increase the framerate slightly, as I can sort of see when it jumps from frame to frame.
Well, I wanted it to be slower, calmer. =) But I see what you mean.

You can do these changes yourself, the CC-BY license permits you to do so. I made a quick edit out of curiosity: Transparency test by RetSamys
Thanks for the comment.

I'm RyugaSSJ3 and I'll be your commenter for the night.

To start off, this is a nice turn on the pages of the book itself. The textures of the book is simple yet it has been given much more shapes thanks to the 3D nature of it all and who say's books are square,eh? ;) The rotation of the book in a 360 degrees is pretty cool as it gives something for the viewer to feel like if you were there.

The only problem with this piece is the name itself. People know what a rotating book is but I prefer to call it 'A world with knowledge' since the world moves clockwise and all. Also, the pages of the book that have not been turned, they need more lines but overall, this is one book animation not to be missing on.

Thank you!
Titles have never played a particularly big role as far as my visual works are concerned. Interestingly enough, I have given a more creative title to one of its predecessors: Mysteries Opening (small gif animation)

You're right about the lines on the still-closed pages. It didn't really occur to me to add this kind of texture.
