Spectropolis

By Retronator
My second huge pixel art piece, pretty much Tribute 2. This time it's an homage to the one and only ZX Spectrum home computer from 1980s. Everything is referenced from way over 100 games for the system, but is custom pixeled by me (no rips).

(I've categorized it as isometric, however, technically it's using oblique projection. It fits with the iso spirit though.)

Brilliant! I can't stop seeing references in there.

Awesome, that's the best reaction to a piece like this, glad it works!
retroenzo's avatar
It certainly does! Did you make a list of all the games referenced so they can be hunted for?
Retronator's avatar
Actually yeah! Even more, my friend made a website for it where you guess the games right there in the image with hints and everything. Hasn't been released yet, but the code is here: github.com/Retronator/Spectrop…

I'll bookmark it because it doesn't look like it's working at the moment, but thanks!

I tried it just now and it was working, at least for me in Chrome.

I had the good old Spectrum +3 and can vaguely recall some games like Out Run and Gauntlet. I really enjoy looking at city views like this one. Great stuff!

We're preparing a website where you will be able to guess all 100+ games! You can sign up for my newsletter to be informed when it's live: tinyletter.com/retronator

I´m tempting to search for Waldo :D
I love the details. Could look at this for hours and still find something new.
Great work!

I'm going to make a webpage where you have to identify all the games, so it'll be a bit like that. :) When … who knows. Sweating a little...

Oh wow. I've never played that much ZX Spectrum so I can't say I recognise most of the games being referenced (aside from a few classic arcade ports ;)) but this looks amazing IMO. :D

This looks awesome! The references from ZX Spectrum games and the awesome pixel art style on this poster paid off really well. Every people who grew up in the ZX Spectrum era and retro gamers deserves to have this as a poster so this is an instant fave. You did a good job with it!

Out of curiosity what is the best ZX Spectrum game you have ever played?
Retronator's avatar
Turbo Esprit! Truly ahead of its time.

Close second: Chase HQ. So smooth animation.

You?
