Refurbishing the NES Test Page by Retro-Specs Refurbishing the NES Test Page by Retro-Specs
I've mentioned it a few times, but for those who do not know, I am working on an ebook that will teach people how to refurbish the Nintendo Entertainment System.

I've seen plenty of ebooks, and I want mine to be different. Rather than choppy paragraphs on white paper, I plan to do this:
A background picture, lots of photos, colourful borders and backgrounds, and my controller mascot throughout.

The reason I've submitted this quick test page (which does not do justice to what the final book will look like. This took me about 40 minutes) is so I can get your opinions:

-Do you think the "microchip" borders look good, connecting the pictures and text boxes together?
-Does it look too "busy", or is it OK on the eyes?
-Are the fonts OK, or annoying?
-Anything that would make it better, easier to read, etc?

I really want to do well with this book. The book is about 15% done, and it will likely be 30-40 pages in the end. So please, guys, let me know what you think, and don't be afraid to tell me what you like/hate about this design idea. I want people to actually WANT copies of this book some day, so it needs to be appealing. Thanks for having a look, guys. All your comments will be appreciated and thoughtfully considered (and answered!).

Wow, what a great idea! I love the microchip borders and the graphics, including the controller mascot. The black font is just slightly hard on the eyes, but I can see why you chose it, because it adds to the whole retro feel. The only thing I might suggest is playing with the opacity of the background to make the items in the foreground stand out more. But even if you leave it just as it is, I think you'll have a very cool product!

Oh, thank you! The book is done and technically online for sale now, but I'm kind of changing my idea on it.
I think I forgot to mention it, but the actual pages in the book have that background at 50% opacity. It does look much better.

The only issue with this "book" is how I made it: too complicated, too many pictures. It will not be accepted on a kindle or ipad or anything else for that matter. I can only sell it "as is" in a PDF file. So, I have a plan. I did save all the text in the book in a Word file, thinking I may need to offer a "printable" version of the book. Now, I am going to take that text and make it into the actual book, formatting it for kindle and ipad and junk. Then this current PDF of the book will be offered for free to anyone who buys the text version, through a link.

I like the font, though I'm almost surprised you didn't use this one [link]

Ah - see, the font I'm using is called "arcade" (I already contacted the maker of the phone about using it in a book I'll be selling). It has three variations: The "normal" one which is basically identically to the "Press Start" font you linked me to, then one with lines through it, and a "rounded" version (You can see all three here: [link]
I figured perhaps that the rounded version will be easier to read. I used to have the "normal" version as my Windows font, but eventually it got hard on the eyes.

As for the rest of the design, do you like it? Think the style I'm using with the borders on the pictures and text areas will work?

Ah, I see. I do think the font you chose does fit it well.

Haha wow, nice.

I do like it. I think it'll work. Of course, do you ever get criticism from me? =P

Ah, glad you think it fits well - I want the book to be both readable and attractive.

It is both.
