Eris

In Greek mythology, Eris, daughter of Zeus and Hera, was the goddess of strife and discord. She is considered partially responsible for beginning the Trojan War. After not being invited to a wedding along with the rest of the gods, Eris retaliated by throwing a golden apple inscribed “For the fairest” among the guests during the celebration. The goddesses began to argue over who should receive the so-called Apple of Discord. This prompted the Judgment of Paris, in which the Trojan prince Paris was promised by Aphrodite the married Helen of Sparta as his bride if he named her the rightful recipient of the apple.

Although being described as having a menacing appearance, as well as disorderly hair and torn clothing, I pictured Eris here as a beautiful goddess, since strife, whether it be between two people or with one’s self, is not always evident. I did make sure to include two of her symbols, the Apple of Discord and a snake. She holds the golden apple and she wears a jeweled snake in her hair as an ornament.
