Standard disclaimer that there's no single right or wrong way to use this tool. These are just a sampling of the techniques I personally use with the gradient map tool. I use the first technique--changing the underpainting tones--in nearly every piece of art I make.
Gradient maps are one of those tools you find new uses for constantly as you experiment with them!

This is a Photoshop exclusive tutorial. I'm not sure if gradient maps exist in other software, but if they do I imagine they work on basically the same principles!
