I started doing artwork with American comics, especially X-men where I would redraw the covers in an attempt to copy them. My Freshman year in High School, around 1990, the local art teacher invited some art students down from what I believe was the Columbus College of Art and Design. I didn't take art class for the first two years of High School, since I did not really consider myself to be an artist, but a student from CCAD gave my friend a color copy of a drawing of an anime style girl, hand painted like an animation cell that he had done. For the first time I found an art style that I just could not seem to copy like I could with American comics. That frustration lead me to attempt the style and to find more art like it. Thus my style became forever stuck in the Anime and Manga style of Japan.
Funny part is that years later, I bought an art book at Otakon and found the exact same picture that inspired me from the guy that had visited the school from CCAD. The drawing was a girl from Gall Force done by Kenichi Sonoda. So I had been inspired by a guy that had copied from the real thing. Real world is strange sometimes!
