Catwoman cosplay

I finally get to translate article about my “Batman Returns” Catwoman costume. And just right time for Halloween x)
I'm very sorry if there are mistakes in the text! And I'm sorry that there are no wip photos, I did not make them, unfortunatelly. But in this article I tried to upload the materials, that helped me to make my own costume.

<cut> Well, first of all few words about why I chose this version. I’m a cat person, I always had cats at home and I love them very much. So it’s not a surprise that I also love such an amazing character as Catwoman. And my first meeting with her happened, when I was a child thanks to Tim Burton’s movie “Batman Returns”. I was amazed by Michelle Pfeiffer’s acting and since then her Selina Kyle is the only one for me. She’s beautiful, dangerous and a little crazy, exactly how Catwoman should be. I always loved the stories about transformation of a good girl into a strong woman.
I badly wanted to make this costume, though I was afraid, because I have nothing in common with beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer. Movie cosplay is tricky as you should look like a real actor, but I decided to try ) In my defense, I also found this official comics adaptation of the movie, so it’s also a comics cosplay x)

Batman Returns Comics

First I thoroughly researched all the info I could find about the costumes production methods they used for the film.

Catwoman costume in museum

Rob Burman about Batman Returns Costumes

And yes, it should be latex, but after learning all the disadvantages of this material, I decided that I want the costume to be more comfortable and wear-resistant. Though I’d like to try working with latex in future.
By the way, during the filming Catwoman changed about 60 costumes and moreover it was very uncomfortable. Michell Pfeiffer could hear nothing in her mask even her own voice. So in the end for my costume I used water look spandex, as it’s rather shiny and wearable.

Costume: Bodysuit

As a base I made a full body suit, using the pattern of these leggings and form-fitting top. You can also look for some catsuit patterns, I have one but it’s in Russian and I unfortunately can’t find the same in English =( The top part looks like this, pretty easy.

And don’t forget about sleeves and neck. Now I have many patterns that I use regularly. So if you once made the patterns of bodysuit keep them, it will save your time in future.

Each time I’m making a body suit I try to do it as tight as possible. I don’t like any extra wrinkles, so first I must be sure it fits me like a glove. To wear the suit I have invisible zipper on my back, but it was too long and now it’s difficult to bend in this costume, so choose the zipper length depending on your measures and make sure it’s not crossing your waistline.
Don’t forget to use special needles for stretchy material on your sewing machine. My fabric was rather difficult to work with. I also very glad that I now have overlocker, all my edges looks perfect x) And it’s so easy to edge spandex!
And the last part here is gloves. I used my usual pattern, that I slightly changed for fitting my hands and fingers. I love when gloves fit perfectly.    .

This part was the most challenging for me as it has rather unique look. I asked for help in some corset communities, but they didn't help much, so I had to start my own experiments, which I don’t like, because I’m not sure in the result >< But there were only two options – do nothing or keep trying. Unfortunately I did not save the final pattern as I was in a hurry, and that’s my biggest mistake T.T
Before starting I made lot of screenshots of Catwoman costume in the movie, to know how it looks like from each side, then searched for many corset patterns, thank you google, and stopped my attention on this Victorian corset pattern with the side hip panels, just like I needed.

Victorian Corset

I started drawing the final pattern, making necessary changes. After five or six tries I finally had something acceptable. I used backing cloth for the first attempts. To make a good corset you should provide all the fit tests on the body of the person you’re making it for. And it’s much more difficult when you have to do it on yourself, as it’s not only should fit you, but also must have slimming and forming effect. The tightest part must be on your waist and not your ribs. So when the corset don’t have bones it makes many wrinkles on the waist which you should smooth to see if it fits you well. But there’s always a danger that you won’t see your mistake till the end. You’ll need time to make it right and see the difference. Search for different corset web-sites and making tutorials, before you start!
To make stretchy fabric harder I used woven interfacing (I hope I used the right term). Though I guess I used not enough of it. If you’re going to make it yourself use 4-6 layers, depending on the properties of your fabric.
For corsets I always use metal spiral bones. If there are too many I can mix it with the plastic ones. On the picture we can see that there are not so much of them here. Though for better form I'd add more bones on the inside part.

Corset bones

And I’m also extremely happy to have grommet installation machine for the lacing, it’s so amazing! x)

This version of Catwoman costume is most known for the white seams, that covering the whole costume. For me it’s always was a mystery how Selina made this whole bodysuit using only one jacket x) But anyway I think it’s an amazing detail that makes the costume look so Burton-ish )

Catwoman conceptart Catwoman costume

On this picture we can see, that seams are glued to the costume, because latex won’t survive the real seams. Real latex must be all-cast or glued, you can’t sew it as a real fabric. But as I chose another fabric I decided to make those seams. I used cotton mouline thread in 2 layers, to make it thicker. Though as my fabric was rather thin, I had to make a backing pieces under each seam to control the thread tension.
I also had to make tons of screenshots to understand how seams were designed on legs, arms and back.

Catwoman mask

The most interesting part of the costume, but I was a cheater, I ordered one from Ebay ><

Catwoman mask

And of course it didn't fit my monster small head and looked like a strange helmet ) So each time I wear it I have to put padding under the hair net to make my head bigger. I enlarged the back cut and installed the hook-and-loop fastener. I also did not liked the under chin strip and cut it off. In the end I enlarged the eye holes to make it look more like in the movie.
I like that it’s made of rubber and in future I'd like to do such masks myself, now I’m learning all the materials I can find about this topic.

The craziest part of the costume, because all of them look different. And again lots of research work ) I found the picture of the claws used in the movie and also this 3D model, that helped me a lot. As you can see it’s the mix of thimbles, wire and metal sewing things.

Catwoman claws
Catwoman hand

So I bought 10 thimbles and looked for acceptable parts in my dad’s closet x) Claws themselves are cut of thin PET sheet. It’s rather soft and won’t hurt anybody on the convention and keeps the form at the same time. After I collected and made everything I need, I glued all the parts together, painted them and glued to the gloves.

I usually have problems with boots, because most of them don’t fit my long feet and thin legs. So I usually make them myself for cosplay. But this time I tried to find real well made boots, and ended remaking the pair I got x)

Make-up and contact lenses

In the end I tested my make-up with grey contacts, which I like a lot, I always wanted to have grey eyes x) I used this ones
Make up should be very bright and intensive. There’re lots of great tutorials on YouTube, just choose one that you like the most. Here's my favourite

Well that’s all regarding the costume. It’s rather comfortable and I like to wear it a lot. I’m very glad that I had an opportunity to bring it to J-Popcon in Denmark and have a shooting there. Here are the photos

Finally Deviant Art gives us the opportunity to change names here! :devart:
And now I'm Rei-Doll instead of Malro-Doll. I loved my old name but it was inconvenient. Why? I have some reasons.

First of all, nobody calls me Malro, I'm Rei for my friends and Russian cospaly community :)
Though Rei is the name that's ALWAYS occupied, as it's popular and easy to remember >___<

Second, most foreighn followers do not know about our cosplay-team R&R. It started as two people-team of me Rei and Ryoko :iconryoko-demon:
So you see it's Ryoko and Rei, Rei and Ryoko and soon people started to cut our names so it became R&R. Now there's more than two people in out cosplay-team, but we still have name R&R =)
And now we are Rei-Doll and Ryoko-Demon x)

When I started my registration on DA and R&R did not exist and Malro was my original character which I loved a lot. But if you love me as Malro, I hope you will love me As Rei too
And YES it's Ayanami Rei, my favourite anime character, that's why I have her name =)

Love, Rei
Hi, everyone!

It's been a while since my last journal entry, long time ago I promised to tell you about our cosplay team R&R, so, now I think it's time to get acquainted! Better late that never =)

So, Hello! We are Russian cosplay team known as "R&R". This name is the connection of first letters of our nicknames Ryoko :iconryoko-demon: and Rei - me (yes, you know me better as Malro-doll here, but it's because "Rei" is the name that ALWAYS occupied >__<).
We've traveled a long way together as cosplay partners and friends, we've been cosplaying for 10 years already. But as a real cosplay team we started our existence at 2007 after many collective projects. Today R&R team consists of 10-15 people. Sometimes we have large performances with more than 22 people. It is very popular in Russia to make cosplay performances and very often cosplay for us is more than just costumes, but real impersonation of a character. So now you can see that cosplaying Team Rocket was our destiny as they have "R" on their shirts.

We will always be together... by Rei-Doll

Cinderella Story

Journal Entry: Mon Aug 15, 2011, 9:05 AM
I started to think about Cinderella cosplay almost 2 years ago, and during a year or so I could not finish it because of many other projects. But finally it's done =)

Few words about costume

As many other little girls I loved Cinderella story in my childhood, though Disney movie itself I watched only few years ago. Frankly speaking it's not my favorite cartoon and I know that my face is not perfect for this princess, and I decided to try myself as Cinderella mostly because I wanted to make justice to her dress. Moreover Cinderella is a movie, created at 50-s, that saved the whole Disney studio from collapse and was made during the lifetime of Walt Disney himself.

The dress seems to be rather easy, though it has some difficult moments that made me think a lot. First of all I was looking for the wig, I knew at once that Cinderella is not typical blonde, she has dark honey-gold hair, so I bought caramel blonde wig from ebay. The wig was even too thick so I had problems with the final hair-stile. In the end I stopped making French twist.

Another problem was main blue fabric. You can see it in the movie, Cinderella's dress is almost silver and shine with glitters. Unfortunately I did not find blue glitter fabric and bought light blue silk and white fabric with glitters for the sleeves and white parts of the skirt.  I'm actually very proud of my sleeves x) I used the Disneyland Cinderella technique, that made of two parts.

Slippers. I saw many times silicone shoes specially made for Cinderella on ebay, but I did not like the form and in the end decided to cover white shoes with glitters.

I hope to make a photoshoot soon, but now, together with our cosplay-team R&R we want to show you our cosplay-video dedicated to Cinderella. I think you all remember our amazing photographer :iconkifir: and his tremendous works.

Corpse bride.. by Kifir   lineage kamael by Kifir   Team Rocket by Kifir   Princess Ariel by Kifir

Now he decided to try himself as video director. You can see his first work from Russian anime-convention here:…

He uses Canon EOS 600D, unfortunately we still don't have steadicam and it is very difficult to make video in motion =(

But still we would like to introduce you our romantic video about Cinderella and her memories.

There's only 2 minutes but we spent the whole day to capture it. First of all you can see Ryoko's little star Reshka, beloved and beautiful mouse. Due to my costume and Reshka we were surrounded by kids, crying "Cinderella! Are you real, Cinderella? Cinderella, where you're going? Can we touch a mouse". And I felt like Cinderella from Disneyland x) The glitters that you can see during the video were made with the help of water and spray. Ryoko was the main creator of magic :)

I want to give my great thanks to Kifir, you're really a genius! Thanks to Ryoko for the inspiration, nothing would be real without you. Special thanks for the great help to PredatoR and ElleBlink. I LOVE you guys!

This costume was hard to wear, and that was a hot day (32o C), but I hope you will enjoy the video and soon we promise to make even more beautiful stories for you =)

Birth of Kamael - New Photoshoot

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 21, 2010, 10:29 AM
Hi again!
Don't know, if there much readers of my journal, but I'm writing again and hope you like it ^__^

Today I'd like to tell you the story of this sudden photoshoot. Yes, the costume is old, but I have never made a photoshoot of it before all the pictures were from the anime conventions. So now I'm glad to have good pictures of it and now I can burn this costume at last >__< Really, I hate it :)

But first, the story...
In the middle of May I've got a letter from Usagi, the editor of a new Russian magazine called PRO COSPLAY, she asked me if I can make an exclusive photoshoot of my lineage 2 cosplay specially for the second issue. Unfortunately I decided to choose my Kamael costume =___= Why unfortunately? Just because after 2 years it seemed impossible to wear it again. I had to remake the whole costume and I even wanted to give up the whole idea. Thanks to Ryoko, who did not let me lose my heart, I finished this costume. And of course thanks to the greatest photographer Kifir (you've already heard a lot about him :) ), now you can enjoy new pictures of my ORIGINAL KAMAEL (you cannot find this costume in the game, I designed it myself).

Well there were lots of other events before you could see these pictures. Beginning with two or three-hours of journey while looking for the field, where were nothing accept the FIELD and SKY O___O When we finally found it we were 100 km away from our hometown. But after the sunset the temperature was falling too, and when we started taking pictures it was about 5 - 0 C >___< And then rushing for the sunset, red and shimmering hands, hunger, as usual and deers springing out from behind the trees just before the car. But nevertheless, the most difficult part was waiting till the magazine was finally published (as the photos should be exclusive).

So I give my thanks again to Ryoko, Kifir and Predator, it couldn't become real without your help!
And good luck to PRO COSPLAY, by the way you can buy it here (if you have friends in Russia of course)
I must say I still do not have it too T__T

the Black Sand

Fri May 21, 2010, 2:34 PM

Long time since I've updated my journal, and my Premium "time", mercifully given by njomany, is over T____T But I just cannot help not to tell You about this special occasion...

It was a fast-planned and created project, inspired by one person from DA.
I think this person even don't know about us, but I hope it would be a good present for her, because it's really amazing if you can inspire someone else =)

So, What's the row, you can ask, and I answer you... it is cosplay of course! That's what we are good at. Moreover it's a Disney cosplay, that we will never be bored with. No more talking, meet Aladdin TV Series cosplay from R&R!

Me as evil Jasmine also so-called Scourge (not a surprise) from the "The Blue Rose of Forgetfulness" # 18
And Ryoko :iconryoko-demon: as (yes, it's a surprise) Mozenrath, the black necromancer
Also Predator as Aladdin, Hideki and Grishan as mamluks and Xerxes =)

And now the fanart that makes us want to do this costumes and the author is scaragh :iconscaragh: Thank you for your work!

Mozenrath25: Dark

And so, this is our interpretation of this picture (a little different but we wanted to show the emotions of the artwork) hope you like it! =)

More of Jasmine and Mozenrath

Nobody can be so perfect as Ryoko cosplaying Black Sorcerer

Be aware... He's Alive!

Look, this is price of real magic power...

No one can escape from Scourge

Dangerous Princess

Oh no! Mamluks trying to catch her!

But there is no way they can do it =)

Annoying Alddin is trying to disturb perfect plans again...

But they chose each other... and there's nothing he can do!
(I know you wanted to see it ^^)

I think we will upload more pictures from this photoset and even video ^^

Now I want to give big thanks to the photographer Kifir, you can look through his gallery on flickr
And PredatoR…

Hope you enjoyed =)

'Alice FROM Wonderland' VIDEO

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 15, 2010, 2:09 PM

Finally I finished editing the video of our Alice performance.
It took us 2 months to make costumes, video, audio, scenery and rehearse the whole staging.
It was a GREAT work I think and I want to give my thanks to all the people who took part in the performance and who helped and supported us.

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 13, 2010, 6:03 PM

Finally! We've made the photoset of my Shirobara Hime. It was taken in one of the studios of my town, and we decided to create a little fairy tale. I think, we really DID it =)

This costume turned to be not very difficult for me. It was rather interesting to create it. The only thing, every time I want to add more and more roses >__< Don't know when I can stop XD I'm really glad that i finished it, I think it's not perfect, but I like some single details and I'm glad that I made my own variant of this costume, as I was mad about it during several years and actually I did not know when I could make it reall :)
Nevertheless, meet my Shirobara Hime!

Special BIG THANKS to Ryoko, for the invaluable help during the photoset.
Photographer is the GREATEST Kifir!
