Johnathan didn’t even turn around. The fourteen-year-old was entirely focused on his match of Tires Tournament, the hottest new mobile game. Staying with his aunt Pauline was boring, and she was annoying enough when she wasn’t having another three friends over to chat forever. He didn’t want to get talking with all of them; and anyway, he had almost gotten to the next level of his Golden Track.
“Yes, he’s staying over for a few days while his parents are overseas. It’s been a wonderful time,” Pauline was saying to the latecomer, as they sat down around the kitchen table with her other friends.

Bitter cold bit through the layers of Ragnar’s furs as he walked the perimeter of his family farm. It settled in his bones as he took in a short breath through his nose. The scent of soil and manure mingled in the air, igniting childhood memories of running through these same empty fields with his brother Ragnvald while his father watched over them.
Now, Ragnar’s own children—and his brother’s eleven-year-old son Volund—ran through the fields, tumbling in the snow as their laughter drifted over to him. Solveig, a girl of ten, and Vegeir, a boy of twelve, threw clumps of snow at each other, coating themselves in the white powder.
