On The Other Side
The air is warm from the sunshine and he hears the waves washing up onto the shore as he slowly shuffles along the path. By now, Kaidan's used to the walking stick he needs to get around but he still hasn't come to the point where he likes being old.
A silhouette peels from the shadows of the large palmtrees and saunters slowly towards him.
"Hey, Kaidan."
Her voice's mischieveous and warm at the same time. Just like he remembers it over all those years.
"Hey, Shepard." He smiles. She hasn't changed a bit. Copper-coloured hair, a crease on her cheek that's almost a dimple when she smiles that lopsided grin that shows she's up to no good. Freckles around her nose.
"How've you been?" she asks. "It's been a while since you came by last."
He wonders for a moment if there's a hint of reproach in her voice but then brushes the thought away. She used to get upset with him when he had developed a habit of showing up a bit too often in the years just after the war, but as he grew older and the l

Rude Awakening
Blurry shapes flashed into existence out of nowhere.
“Something’s wrong”, a female voice sounded muffled somewhere outside Eliana Shepard’s field of vision.
A male voice, tinged with worry and a touch of excitement replied: “She’s reacting to outside stimuli, showing an awareness of her surroundings.”
Things went black for a fraction of a second but then the shapes became a little clearer – though not by much - and turned into what appeared to be bits of ceiling and medical equipment.
“Oh, my God, Miranda”, the male voice blurted just as the shape of a woman came into Shepard’s sight. “I think she’s waking up.”
Confused, unable to form a coherent thought, her eyes darted around and were able to make out the face of a bearded man looking down on her whilst the female commanded: “Dammit, Wilson, she’s not ready yet, give her the sedative.”
The Commander’s eyes shot back to the dark

With a visible air of irritation Commander Eliana Shepard headed out of the lab and stomped past the three dimensional galaxy map that occupied the centre of the CIC on board the Normandy, straight towards the bridge. The Cerberus crew on duty did their best to stay out of her way, some saluting, others preferring to seek refuge in obscurity, hoping to remain invisible.
The door to the cockpit swished open and shut again after she had entered.
“Alright, EDI, talk to me.” The Commander stood, facing the glowing orb, ignoring the ship’s helmsman who appeared to be returning the favour. Normally, she would have picked up on that right away as the snarky pilot usually had a word of greeting or a sarcastic statement about one or the other crew member for her but right now, her focus was otherwise engaged.
“Please specify the data you wish to review, Commander”, the AI’s voice sounded through the cockpit.
Shepard’s eyebrows knitted closely together.

A Hunter's Tale

Chapter 16 – Meetings (Part 1)
Torihn leaned over the table in the roomy tent, supporting his weight on the knuckles of both his fists as he studied the map that was spread out before him with intense focus.
"I see where you are coming from", he said slowly, "and I have to admit, I'd also rather be on our way somewhat sooner than later but the Queen's reasoning is sound. Among all the others leaving the summit, one extra servant girl and the rest of us won't draw attention. Still, I like to have my bases covered, so let's get a good look at those maps so we have a rough idea of what's in store for us and give us room to change our plans on short notice if the need arises."
"As it always does", Lilliah smirked, leaning comfortably against one of the large posts that kept the command tent up as she followed the discussion. Shadow had stretched himself out beside her on the floor and yawned with obvious boredom.

Early Years
The door shut behind her with the usual swooshing sound as Commander Shepard entered the tiny quarters on Arcturus Station.
"Hello?" she called out and waited for a few seconds for a reply. However, when the apartment remained in its silent state, she shook her head and checked her omni-tool for messages but apart from the one that had prompted her to check back to these lodgings there were no further notifications.
With a sigh, she decided to take a look around. The main bedroom was perfectly tidy, everything military style in its place as it should be. The second room looked much the same apart from some posters of different rock bands that had been plastered on the walls of the otherwise austerely furnished military living quarters of the station. But the Commander knew not to be fooled by outward appearances. She had a distinct inkling that if she were to look inside the drawers and cupboards and underneath the bed, a different and more horrifying picture would reveal itself as it

Between Rannoch Missions
"What the hell, Shepard? What just happened? I mean, I was there but …" Kaidan looked up from his datapad as Commander Shepard entered the Starboard Observation room but then added a quick: "Actually, don't tell me. I've got work to do and I … I can't be distracted."
Stopping a few steps in front of him, a mischievous grin spread over Eliana Shepard's lips. "I was plugged into the virtual world of the Geth consensus", she let the last word all but melt on her tongue with a smile that reminded him of the cat having gotten the cream, "saw their history, purged a Reaper infection …"
"Crap!" he exclaimed. "Now I'll be obsessing about how that works instead of doing my Spectre Division Expense Report."
She chuckled and crossed her arms in front of her chest. "You're welcome."
"You know, entering the Geth consensus is going to be the best chapter in your autobiography." There was a twinkle around his eyes when he said that.
"If we make it that far", the copper haired woman rep

Lucky to Have You
The former Tech Lab on board the Normandy was a flurry of voices. Some angry, some excited and most heavily pregnant with a note of utter disbelief. Whilst most of the squad and some of the relevant crew stood around the large table discussing what she had just told them, Eliana Shepard was leaning against the wall and looked on silently. After the mission's ordeals she was exhausted. And yet, instead of resting, she had spent the time Dr Chakwas had her confined to Med Bay to sort out the host of injuries she had brought back with her, writing up her report for the Admiralty Board and had been off that bed the very second the doctor had permitted it.
Her eyes fell on Kaidan who was standing quietly a bit to the side on his own, looking sullen. He'd been with her when the shuttle had crash-landed on the floating shipwreck and together with Liara had helped her keep Reaper Forces off Cortez so he could do his repairs. And from there, everything somehow had spiralled into one of the stra

Butting Heads
"Naw, the new TX322 has nothing on the good old VT-X41", Kenneth Donnelly said shaking his head. "Not enough 'umph' in the drive core and too weighty with the armoured plating they slapped on it. That'll make her really heavy to manoeuvre in close quarters and slow her down like there's no tomorrow."
Steve Cortez nodded slowly, considering what the engineer had just said. They were both down in the Shuttle Bay, leaning against one of the work benches off to one side and enjoying their downtime by discussing fighter models, a subject he had not known the other man was clued up on the way he was. "You'll have to admit though, that the TX322 has a smoother transition system if you compare it to the VT-X41. Though, not that it would matter much if you gave either of them to Vega to fly. He'll just crash them anyway", the dark-skinned man said with a chuckle.
"Aye. You got that right", Donnelly grinned and shook his head in amusement, though the latter was not so much because of the soldier

Chapter 15 – A Queen's Plea (Part 3)
After a few more moments of silence, Alexstrasza said slowly: "This … is not an easy thing. It is usually us Aspects who come to the aid of others but not us who have to ask for help. In doing so, I am aware that your lives will be at risk and it pains me to even think of putting somebody in harm's way. Yet, I am compelled to do so by a force that runs as deep as the gift I was given, if not deeper."
Though her demeanour remained regal and calm outwardly, Lilliah's honed senses detected the slight tremor in her voice and the way her hands twitched for a brief moment before she stopped herself from playing nervously with her own fingers.
"You are, of course, aware of the threat Azeroth is facing at present", Alexstrasza began again and when all of those present nodded, she continued: "Our brother, Nozdormu, the Aspect of Time, has seen that Neltharion in his thirst for destruct

Gone
His eyes snapped open and he found the room quiet and dark, save for a tiny little pilot light on the ceiling which probably was some kind of smoke detector. Though he tried to slow them, his heartbeat continued to race and his breathing came in short gasps as it had been doing nearly every night he woke like this for the past year, seven months and twenty-three days. He could sense the air crackling softly with biotic charge. His biotic charge.
Falling back into the pillows, Kaidan Alenko's left hand automatically roamed aimlessly over the sheets beside him, regardless of the certain knowledge that he would find them cold and empty. She was gone.
He touched his left jaw, ran his hand down his neck and over his muscled chest and thought it strange that despite her being gone for so long now, it seemed as if he could still feel her forehead pressing against his mandible the way it had on their last night together when she had buried her head in the crook of

Nursing a drink in his hand, Lt Alenko was leaning with his back against the bar, comfortably supported by his elbows. For such a relatively new nightclub, the Flux was pretty busy he thought but then, the entire Citadel seemed to be out to celebrate, making use of any venue that had not been destroyed by Sovereign's attack and ultimate demise. The music was a tad too noisy for his taste and judging by the look on Eliana Shepard's face earlier she felt about the same but the heavy beat was catchy all the same and he had to admit that he could get used to the feeling of relief which hung in the air ever since they had fought off the impending invasion.
In truth, he had been pleasantly surprised when the Commander had hesitantly accepted his invitation to join the Normandy's crew at the nightclub, having witnessed her turning down Captain Anderson's invitation to the same event previously.

"Ouch, that stung." Eliana Shepard winced and tensed up visibly. "You did that on purpose."
"There, there", Dr Chakwas' gentle voice said in a kindly teasing manner. "Do you really believe I would do such a thing?"
"I wouldn't put it past you", the copper-haired soldier growled through clenched teeth and forced herself to relax, knowing it would ease the pain of the procedure somewhat. More than anything, she hated the fact that she couldn't actually see what the medic was doing because she was lying on her stomach and the needle had to be inserted through her back to reach the appropriate location with minimal invasion. So the doctor had said. Wonder what's not invasive about sticking a needle into somebody's back, Shepard thought.
"I'm sorry for having to do that but you took quite a beating down there and the readings of that implant had me a little worried", the doctor admitted. "There. Hold still now and removing the probe won't hurt quite as

A Hunter's Tale

Chapter 15 – A Queen's Plea (Part 2)
The rest of their journey had been largely uneventful. During one night on their way down the Crystal Vice they had provisionally dug a tiny shelter into the ice wall of a crack that ran deep enough into the sidewall of the canyon to have some protection from the elements whilst they slept. They had put their horses a few yards further into the crack and fastened some ropes with steel hooks into the ice as a make-shift barrier so their mounts would not wander off as they rested.
Their warm meal though, they had had a few hours before because they had not dared light a fire close to where they had wanted to sleep on account of the fact that it would have been seen for miles in the dark and made a fine beacon to lure any kind of predator close to them.
Their progress was good, however, largely also to the fact that their use of horses meant they had to press on and ride hard to pass

"I'm merely saying that I'm wondering about your motives", Garrus said, ducking behind a ledge to dodge a bullet. Presumably, judging by the shards that lay scattered in and outside, it had once held the window pane of an abandoned pre-fab building but was now empty.
Eliana Shepard peered over the same ledge which she, too, was using for cover and withdrew quickly as a projectile whistled past her: "And you had to pick a Merc ambush as a good moment to talk, Vakarian?"
"At least I know you won't just walk out on me while they have us pinned here", the Turian grinned and fired another quick shot into the rough direction of where the Mercenaries had taken cover.
"You're so lucky right now I need you to get out of here alive", Shepard growled back, though the smirk on her face betrayed her.
She put her index finger on the communicator in her ear: "Kaidan? What's your status?"

Okay. So, not really.

It's the start of a new financial year and the company restructure has happened. For me that means essentially that instead of having a fulltime job and trying to juggle the kids and everything else, I'm cutting back on work and just winding up the old business over the next three months and training those who took over the work from me.

It also means a few months of strategic break from being a business owner and doing all the paperwork in connection with it.

So far, I have resisted the under-handed shaming and attempts by the other party involved to send me on a guilt trip about taking time out. And I shall continue because it's not like they suspect that I will just be playing computer games all day. I still have the old business to wind up, a house to renovate so it can be put on the market and four kids to raise. I've been working so much over the past few years (especially the past two of them) that I'm pretty much burned out. After having worked 12 years straight without any real holidays (I took my work with me when we went away) or maternity leave after any of my four kids, I need that break.

There's only a year and a half left until my youngest will go to school. I want to enjoy her. I'd like to be able to take her to dance classes and swimming lessons instead of 'sorry, mom can't do that because mom has to be at work'.

Sure, I WILL be playing a little bit during the day when I feel like it but I'm also looking forward to doing something else than book keeping for a change. Housework (which I've pretty much been ignoring for the past three years and just been 'putting out fires' when it was really necessary to do so) and renovations will be a nice change though I guess I'll be over the novelty of doing housework again pretty quickly.

The other thing I'm also hoping for is some time to get back some creativity and finish a few writing and drawing projects that I've not been able to touch in so long.

There's also a lot of sewing right now because we'll be going to the annual Medieval Fair in QLD at the end of this week and my kids had outgrown all their 11th century clothing so I had to let their garb out or - where that wasn't possible - sew new stuff for them. Admittedly, my toddler girl looks adorably cute in those things. Also had to sew myself man-clothes because I'm finding it too hard to do proper sword practise in the usual attire worn by women in that time because all those skirts just get terribly in the way. Got permission to carry my sword by my side during the fair so I wanted to really get my clothes done.

So ... in the end I guess I'm just hoping for a bit of quiet to recharge my batteries before returning to the business in a different role because I'm not doing paperwork anymore. I'll be going back as a back-up technician for one of our installers. Once I've sorted that social anxiety of mine. But I'm working on that.

At any rate, I'm looking forward to doing some writing, drawing and whatever else my muse inspires me to do. Here's hoping it'll be lots.

  • Reading: The Calling
  • Playing: ME1, 2 & 3 (Still ... I know ...)
  • Drinking: Cuppa tea
