Brushes FAQs

Wed Aug 2, 2006, 5:23 PM
Here's a list of frequently asked questions, and their answers.

I'm new to this whole Photoshop brushes thing. How do I get started?

The first thing you're going to want to understand is how to install the Photoshop brushes that you can download from this website. I have a tutorial that walks you through installing photoshop brushes.

Once you feel a bit more comfortable with that, I also have <a wytiwyg="1" href="<a href=" http:="" deviantart.com="" users="" outgoing?http:="" www.obsidiandawn.com="" tutorials"="">tutorials on more complex things involving Photoshop brushes, as well as tips and techniques!

What version of Photoshop will these work in?

Any version of Photoshop from 7 up until the most recent version will be able to use most of these brushes, patterns, and tutorials. Any version of Photoshop Elements from version 2 and on can use them.  Any GIMP version from 2.2.6 and up can use them.

Oh no! I don't use Photoshop or GIMP! Can I still use your brushes somehow?

Yep! You most certainly can! On each of my deviation descriptions, there will be a link back to my website - generally for purchasing a license. Follow that link, and you'll find image pack downloads available on my website. You can use those to create brushes in your favorite graphics program!

When I use your brushes, they just show up in black & white. How do I get them to show up in all the colors like you display them on your images?

One of the beautiful things about Photoshop brushes is the fact that they show up in whatever color you have selected to "paint" them in. However, this makes having brushes show up in multiple colors a bit more difficult. If you're interested in doing that, check out my tutorial on adding multiple colors to your Photoshop brushes.

I'd like to convert your brush sets and make them available for others. Is this possible?

You'll have to email me to get permission for this.  I no longer allow GIMP conversions, because my brushes now work in GIMP.

Can I use your brushes commercially?

Yes.  You have the option of either crediting me everywhere you use them or purchasing a commercial license.

Anything else not covered here...

... please feel free to contact me via my website.

Question: If I sell the artwork including the brushes, where/how do you want me to credit you, in the artwork/description/etc? (I might use for DA and Etsy)

Is it ok to use your brushes and/or patterns to make some literature templates for free use for prints here on dA? I'll credit you of course but I'd be making stock from your stock. Is it ok? In case you're wondering what I'm talking about [link] I'd like to make some of these

Ok, I have PhotoShop CS3 so all brushes should work with it, but when I go to my list of brushes, they don't show up, no brushes I've downloaded from anyone do, they just aren't on the list.... is there something else you have to do to them? I'm really sorry I'm bothering you.. but please.

Are you unzipping them? The file extension should be ABR, not ZIP. When most of us brushmakers put stuff up on the internet, we compress (zip) it to make it smaller, so the download is quicker. All it should take is to unzip them into your Photoshop > Presets > Brushes directory, and they should show up.

Yes, I did that excatly.... still didn't show up when I opened the folder in photoshop.... well then again, it also doesn't appear in the original folder... only when you actually save it there, does it show up with the others.... but it's the same file type... :hmm:

Try doing this. Instead of choosing a brush set from that menu, choose "Replace Brushes"... it will ask you to find the file you want to open. Choose the right file, and see if it opens. If it doesn't, then there's definitely something wrong. Perhaps a corrupted download. If it DOES, ... well, then at least you can do it that way. Oh, and one thing I didn't mention before. If you install the brushes with Photoshop open, it will not show up in that list until AFTER you close and reopen Photoshop. Maybe that was all it was?

Let me know!

No I tried closing it first... the thing is, they don't show up in the folder I saved them too...

Well except for just now, I tried doing the same thing with yours and they worked.. ^^; maybe th were corrupt, or I did something different, really not sure... anyway thanks for all your help!

Your brushes are really amazing by the way! :D

I'd love to be able to help, but I have NO idea how to use GIMP. I downloaded it once, to learn it and to start making brushes for it... but then they started making PS 7 brushes compatible with GIMP and so I didn't have to anymore. Sorry I couldn't help more! :(

Heyla sweety!! I just wanted you to know I used these brushes in writing a tutorial for Advanced Photoshop Magazine. They let me put a link directly in the article to your DeviantArt page, as well as link it in the instructions in the tutorial. :) In order for people to follow the tutorial, they have to come here and visit this page.

I'm not sure which issue it will be in, but I will let you know as soon as I do. I think it is June or July's issue though.

Thank you!!

Hmm. Okay, well, that'll do, I suppose. I have a thing in my ToU, however, that says whenever you use my stuff off dA, I'd really prefer the credit to go to my website (www.brushes.obsidiandawn.com), but that's fine. You've already submitted it and everything, no worries. :)

Thank you for the link, regardless! :)

Hey there,
I've been trying to use some of your brushes that are in GBR format but I can't seem to convert them into ABR nor will my Photoshop CS2 accept them as they are, what can I do about this?

:iconredheadstock:

I have no idea. You must've gotten a bad download, because I don't have ANY brushes that are in GBR format. :)

They're all ZIP files, which you "unzip" using Windows or your favorite extraction utility, and then put them into your Photoshop > Presets > Brushes folder.

If it happens a second time, let me know which set and I'll double check it. And then go to my website and get them from there.. I KNOW they're right there! [link]

I'm using your heart brushes in a trainer card, but I'm not sure if I should put "Brushes by redheadstock" or "www.redheadstock.deviantart.com" because all of that would take up too much space. x.x What do you want me to do?

I have a question. I'm an iconist. Is it okay to use your brushes for icons, signatures, and other things that will be distributed to other users? I ask because while I can credit you in my batch post, people who use the icons from my batch probably won't be crediting you. However, they will credit me, and when people come to my LJ and look at my list of credits, it will link to you. Is tha okay?
