There Was an Old Woman...

Description

There was an old woman tossed up in a basket,
99 times as high as the Moon,
Where she was going, I just had to ask it,
For in her hand she carried a broom.

"Old woman, old woman, old woman," said I,
"Where are you going to, up so high?"
"To sweep the cobwebs from the sky."
"May I go with you?"
"Aye, by and by."

There's a VERY interesting thing concerning Celtic legends and Russian tales - the main images there are EXACTLY the same) Well, mythology of all cultures if almost the same(same sense with different names), but Russian and Celtic, Russian and earlier European are really close to each other. Europeans have forgot a lot of details in these stories(that's why big amount of sense is gone), but Russians saved some more. So concerning this image we have so called "Baba Yaga", who was an old woman-magician and who could fly around the sky in a mortar with broom in hands. So the main hero of the tale usually met her in the forest and she gave him knowledge of haw to kill/win the dark forces. "Baba" from todays Russian means "a woman, who gave acne (and still keeps on giving) a birth to children". "Yaga" from ancient Russian should be interpreted in two parts: "ya"="I/the God in myself" and "ga"="~movement forward". So all in all Baba Yaga is a magician, who gives a birth to fetus of God inside person, she helps person to open the God onside himself.

By the way, not many russians know all this and even think about this, so you have quite exclusive information))
