                                                 Holding On To Nothing

Maka woke up earlier then she usually did. She was tired of seeing horrible nightmares every time she closed her eyes. Her morning routine went on as it did any other day. The sense of normalcy calmed her down a bit. Stein sat at the table while Marie was cooking eggs. The two parent like figures were chatting quietly. Though the conversation seemed light their voices were urgent as if they were hiding something.

"Good morning Maka" Marie and Stein greeted.

"Good morning" Maka greeted. Her morning went on as it did any day. After breakfast Maka tended to the few chickens Marie and Stein still had all the others dead or missing from past wolf attacks. Afterwards she would help Marie clean up any part of the house that my still be broken from recent wolf attacks then Maka helps other families whose houses are still ruined. By the time she has finished most of the tasks lunch time has rolled around and most including the timber workers sit down for a few minutes to rest or eat. Everyday Maka makes lunch for both her and Soul and walks over to the timber yard to talk and eat with him for a few minutes.

So like any other day Maka makes a two lunches and stashes them into a basket and walks to the timber yard. She found Soul sitting on the stump of a tree. The horses that help him pull the timber to the village are tied to a tree that is still standing. Soul stared out into a hidden nothingness looking deep in thought.

"Hey Soul" Maka greeted quietly. Soul turned towards her.

"Hey Maka" he greeted a small smile on his face. Maka made her way over to him careful not to trip on any twigs scattered across the ground.

"I brought lunch" Maka explained holding up the basket full of food.

"Cool" Souls smile grew into a grin showing off his abnormally sharp teeth. Maka smiled as well. She handed Soul his portion of the food and took her own. Soul began to eat his food quickly.

"You know you are going to choke if you keep eating that fast" Maka pointed out.

"I'm surprised you came today" Soul stated ignoring Makas comment.

"Why" Maka asked.

"With what happened last night I figured you'd be irritated with me or something. It was uncool of me to..."

"No" Maka interrupted Soul her voice high and squeaky when saying that. "I mean I actually wanted to talk to you about that" Makas voice was back to its normal tone and volume.

"Really" Soul looked a bit surprised.

"Yeah I mean I feel the same way...I just...don't know where our relationship stands in all of this" Maka was now blushing. She quickly looked away causing Soul to chuckle.

"Don't be embarrassed. That's how you feel and I'm glad you do" Soul stated sitting next to her. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder. Maka had expected it to feel awkward but it didn't it felt...natural.

The moment was short lived though. The bell indicating the break was over rang out.

"I'll see you later. Just please Maka don't get into any trouble with Kid. I don't want him to think he can harm you and get away with it" Soul explained. He was truly worried about her safety. He kissed her on her cheek and hen stood up.

"Okay see you then" Maka said understanding why Soul was so worried. Soul made his way back to his work while Maka walked back to the village to get back to her chores. First going to her home to talk to Marie for a few moments then went back to helping the other village families with their homes. Just another normal day in her life.

While keeping herself busy with work Maka ran into her father who was upset that he couldn't talk to her without having to deal with Stein Maka felt a bit a pity for him but then she remembered how Spirit had gotten into this mess.

~Flashback~

"Papa" Maka called out. She was only 5 years old and now very scared. It was the night of the full moon and even at her young age Maka knew that if the windows and doors weren't locked that they wolf would end up killing her and her father. She was far too small to close the windows on he own so she called out for her now missing papa to help. Tears began to stream down her face.

"Papa" she cried out with no response. She ran throughout her home searching for her father who seemed to be gone. 'Maybe he's outside finishing up his job' with that thought Maka ran out of her home. The village seemed to be empty all the adults and their children if they had any safe in their homes while Maka couldn't even find her own father. She wouldn't give up to continued to walk through the village calling for her father.

"Stein look there's a child wandering the street" A motherly voice called breaking the deathly silence of the village. Maka knew who Stein was she had heard about him. He was the doctor of the village. Maybe he knew where her papa was. She ran to here the voice came from. There a strange looking man and a woman stood.

"She's Spirit child" the man explained.

"Where's your father" The lady asked kindly.

"I don't know" Maka began crying.

"We can't leave her out here all alone Stein" the lady reminded Maka of her mother who had been gone for awhile. The two decided that they would take Maka in for the night and after a long argument with her father Maka found herself living with Stein and Marie permanently.

~Flashback end~

Maka suddenly felt no sympathy for her father after remembering that night She glared at her lousy father and walked away. As she walked by the meeting building she noticed another meeting being held. This time only the most important families of the village. Maka knew she should just walk away and forget she ever saw the meeting at all but something told her it was important. She wasn't necessarily spying either. The people inside were talking loud enough that Maka could hear their words but she couldn't quite tell who was saying what except for when Kid talked she could make out his deathly calm voice anywhere.

"Why this solution" A man asked anger clear in his tone.

"Then what else are we to do? Just sit back and watch more of our villagers die each full moon" Kid asked.

"No...but we can find a better solution then this one" the man insisted. "This solution could mean the end of our village" the man added.

"Not quite we've actually come to an agreement" Kid explained.

"How would you know. He could be lying" the mans voice became louder.

"My father has decided this is the best solution for our village" Kid stated.

"Then why did you call a meeting if the decision has been made" another man asked sounding irritated.

"I would like you to spread word of a new solution that will be here soon" Kid announced. "You are dismissed" he added. The villagers began to exit the building. Maka turned away from the building and walked trying to look as if she was just walking past the  building. She wondered what or who this solution was and why was I so bad. If it got rid of the wolf then why is it horrible. Knowing Kid it could end up being horrible. All these unanswered questions irritated her. For now she pushed the thoughts from her head. Hopefully she would be able to answer the questions. Right now she would need to get back to her normal  routine. She couldn't let this new information make her look as if she was acting differently.

"Hey Maka" a familiar voice called out.

"Hey Soul" Maka greeted turning to him. He had a serious look in his eyes. "what's wrong" she asked.

"I saw you listening to that meeting" Soul answered. Instead of getting really mad at her he pulled her into a hug. "I would never forgive myself if I let you get hurt by Kid" he whispered. Maka realized how foolish it was to listen in on the conversation. She would have found out eventually from a villager. Maka rested her head on Souls chest.

"Please Maka don't do it again. I know I can't make you but I don't want you to get hurt" Soul said.

"I know Soul just..."

"Maka I know you believe he is the wolf but you can't thro an accusation at him like that. We have no proof and I realize he did threaten you but a threat can mean a million things...Maka I don't want him to hurt you" Soul explained. A long moment of silence passed between the two. Maka took in what Soul had just told her. He really did care for her.

"They said they had a solution but..." Maka whispered her voice slightly muffled by Souls shirt.

"But what" Soul said.

"They aren't sure whether or not it's a good solution" Maka explained.

"Why would it be bad" Soul stated.

"I'm not sure" Maka answered.

"Did they say when this solution would start" Soul asked.

"No just that they had one" Maka answered. Soul nodded. He let her out of the hug then wrapped his arm around her shoulder.

"Do you want me to walk you to wherever your going" Soul asked.

"I'm going home and I would like that very much" Maka answered smiling at Soul receiving a grin from him. Though he looked a bit angry which is rare to see him like that.

"Soul" Maka asked worriedly.

"Oh sorry. Just got a bit lost in thought. Let's get you to your house" Soul said. During the walk they were quiet. Neither said a word. It wasn't awkward though. Nothing was awkward with Soul because his laid back and well cool attitude.

When they arrived at Makas home Soul kissed Maka and whispered a goodnight to her before walking away. Something was on his mind she could tell. Though she couldn't tell what maybe it was this whole solution thing.

Like any other night would go Maka helped with dinner and when they finished and cleaned up she went to sleep though she continued to wonder.

'Why would Soul be so upset that they might have found a solution that would end the wolf'
