Oooshala - The Water Horse

Some of you have been following my journal where I talk about my practices as a contemporary shamanist / animist / totemist / insert-other-ist-here. Part of that is working with spirit helpers, or bizarre, mythological, or legendary creatures in the otherworlds.

Meet Oooshala, the young water horse who is still finding his voice, and mostly helps me in my shamanism to carry things I need for healing myself and others from place to place.

There are many types of mythological water-horse. However, Oooshala is based off a European type, where he is a small fey pony with a mane and tail of fire. He lives in the sea to keep his inner flame from burning out of control; but he can emerge from time to time, lighting the path, and protecting those who require protection.

The juxtaposition of fire and water, blue and orange, is delightful.

That's lovely! Most water-horses are rather malevolent... I mean, kelpies. *shudder* Nice to see a friendly one!

I love the red/blue contrast; the colors are very rich and saturated, but it's a nice effect.

Yeah, there's definitely a ton of different kinds of waterhorse. Oooshala is more neutral than anything (i.e. his morals don't intersect with mine), but not malevolent! The malevolent ones scare the hell out of me.

Mneegh, yes. Some of them are really freaky. The aughisky'll be a perfectly fine horse if you can catch it... until you let it near water. Then its skin turns sticky and it jumps in, drowns you, then eats all of you but your liver. I mean, meep.

What a lovely being. I like the stark background of the beach and water, the intense colors . . . and that ear :hmm:

Wow, very nice. I love the colouring here, especially the way the fiery mane contrasts with the blue of the water. Great picture!

This is a beautiful eye-catching piece. Definitely one of my favorites. I wish I was not a starving artist myself, because if I could I would indeed commission a similar piece from you. But alas!!

Your pieces always have wonderful symbolism.

Lovely! :) Here, the waterhorse (Nøkken) is evil, and drowns whatever victims (usually children) that he can entice to ride on his back: [link]

*nods* I know, many waterhorses - like the Each Uisge - can be very evil, but thankfully some are not. :)

Gorgeous, as usual, and even more so since you shared the uncolored version! He looks sort of sad, which makes me rather sad for him.
