Emugirl by Ravenari Emugirl by Ravenari
Emugirl

Emugirl was a wight/spirit I met in Koondoola bushland one day, around a grove of sheoaks/casuarina (the tree I now associate with them). Now I see them almost everywhere, including in the bushland where I live now.

So I think emugirls are pretty common.

I have no idea if there are emuboys too. I've never seen them.

Wow… fantastic. I am both awed and wary of this emugirl spirit. I have the feeling she is very very powerful but also calm and even-tempered. How long ago did you meet this spirit?

I met her a few years ago, actually. I feel the same way with her - very powerful, but even-tempered. So far, I have never seen them angry.

Wow, the eyes are amazing! Obviously since I've never seen one I can't say if you've 'captured' them well, but they have that kind of quality. I'll just agree with everyone else about the hair-feathers, they're great.

Do these only appear around emus, or have you seen them alone?

In all honesty, I've never actually seen them *with* emus. But the first time I saw them, it was a in a tract of bushland where the emus had been wiped out. That might be why?

Like some kind of emu psychopomp? That would be pretty cool.

This is haunting and beautiful at the same time. Hauntingly beautiful. I love emus and I am happy to see they have spirits that take after them. I would love to know more about them if you can say anything. Are they protective spirits?

The few times I've met them, they seem innocent and wise all at the same time. I've heard them singing together, which has been amazing. They run with the emus, fleet of foot, and keeping pace with them, and I think the emugirls are playful and help female emus find their way to males.

But beyond that I don't know, I've only encountered them three times.

Thank you so much for sharing that. I got a very vivid image of what you just described. I see a fairie-tale in it, at least :)

I should write their stories down. It's a very personal mythology, within my own practice of shamanism - so I'd never say it was 'factual' but... everyone has their own stories and beings they can access. And emugirl is one I was lucky enough to meet.

You definitely should! You know your style would make a really beautiful picture book if you ever wanted to write down your ideas and put images to them. I would buy it.

This is a really nice picture. I love the skin tone (though more in the real life picture) and the way you've done the eyes and the feathery hair. Super awesomea!

The hair-feathers took me forever, especially as emu feathers are double-shafted (two feathers come off one shaft), so drawing them made me want to pull my own hair out and use that instead!
