Baba Yaga by Ravenari Baba Yaga by Ravenari
RESUBMIT - I took a new photo, processed it properly this time, and accurately did justice to the darkness and colour balance of the original. So here you go! :)

Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga has been reduced to a folklore figure, but sources strongly suggest that she was originally worshipped as a goddess; and that is certainly how I see her.

Those who have heard of Baba Yaga, know of her often as the antagonist in the story of 'Baba Yaga and Vasilissa the Brave.' They know of her flying around in a mortar, living in a home that spins on chicken legs (or a single leg, depending on the country). It is lesser known that she is associated heavily with animals like the pelican and the snake. As well as cats, geese and black hounds.

Not an easy goddess to work with by a long shot, and never one I would have consciously chosen to work with. But the truths she shows me, while they always make me feel older, enrich my life regardless.

Tolere, Vavale.

What a beautiful depiction of Her! ♥ I'm glad there are still people out there who realise that She is indeed a Goddess.

There are indeed. I've seen a movement recently of people declaiming Her, and saying She was never meant to be a Goddess. But there is strong academic support for Her both as Goddess, and as a figure in fairytales.

This is beautiful! You've captured her perfectly.  Her face kinda says Fuck i care am I worshipped or not, I'm still goddess and I can kick ass.

Is that true about her being a goddess? And if so, where did you learn it?)

It's part of a familial spiritual practice, which derives from Finno-Ugric practices. But it's not a spiritual path accessible to outsiders, so I basically do artwork based on the stories of my family / pathway, and keep it at that. That being said, there are over 160 different versions of Baba Yaga's tale, and it's really not unfeasible that she didn't derive from chthonic goddesses and other forms of goddesses throughout the region.

Do you know where I can read more about Northern legends and beliefs? I want to do research for a book!

She's wonderful.  I thought she was Russian - the rune would suggest she's also Nordic.  Is this so?

She is Russian! But the runes featured here aren't the Elder Futhark/Uthark, but other symbols. So there's no real Nordic reference here.

I have always adored Baba Yaga, despite all the stories that paint her out to be an evil witch. Here, you have made her look wise and soft. Someone who cares for her children. Fantastic. I really like the way you inserted the animals into her hair.

Cerridwen is another example of an ex-goddess turned evil witch. She was a celtic goddess of fate and the moon.

Yes, I'm aware of Cerridwen; though generally in paganism Cerridwen is accepted wholly as a goddess - the same is not true for Baba Yaga, who many pagans have still not heard of, or not heard of outside of the context of archetypal fairytales.

The Celtic deities get a lot of love in a diverse array of pagan practices, which is good, but I do find myself wishing that love was more balanced throughout different cultures.

Baba Yaga! She's awesome. You've really done her justice :) Many people think of her as being evil... but she isn't ALWAYS like that. Just don't f-ck with her and she's got no problem with you. Can actually be rather nice once you get to know her... ^^; Love it!!

That's not been my experience! I don't know if I'd ever associate the word 'nice' with Baba Yaga / Vavale. That being said, I do think that she can be very wise and incredibly powerful both once you know her, and when you don't. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her.

I believe it. But I have reason for what I say. Believe it or not she actually watched over my boyfriend's family for a time when something... much less friendly... was in their house, and I met her then. Now THAT was an experience.
