Okay so I know this stamp is like SUPER old and any comment I make probably won't be seen by anybody, but honestly as I've been going through my stamps and found this, I've realized that I actually don't have as much of a passionate hatred for recolors as I did when I first faved this thing. Mainly because I feel like I have more compassion and understanding for the people who make them now that I'm older, and I feel like my perspective is still worth sharing. So just...do with this whatever you will and take it with a grain of salt. It's just my personal viewpoint.

Now obviously I don't think it's okay to just take a screencap or a picture of someone elses artwork, color over it, post it, and pretend you drew the whole thing when really you basically just used another drawing as a base. I feel like it is always best to either not post it or at least be honest about where you got the image from. But I do understand that for some people, making recolor OC's is just their first step into character creation as wee children and just need something to start from bc the idea of just making something from nothing is a little overwhelming right off the bat, which is understandable, and thats okay. We all have a different art journey and the fundamentals of drawing can be very daunting at first. Besides...if I'm being honest, I feel like recolors made from screencaps from TV shows like Sonic X are significantly less harmful than stealing a piece of artwork from DA considering on DA and other social media sites, independent artists can be easily contacted and are probably trying really hard to profit from their work and make a living at it and can actually be greatly harmed by the existence of copies/recolors, while people who make shows like Sonic X where these recolors come from ARENT as easy to contact and probably dont care that much because they've already successfully made money on the show and probably arent gonna suffer if recolors are out there. Does that even explain it properly? IDK.

My point is that in my mind, as long as it isnt an illustration another artist made directly, I dont think it's AS much of a big deal. We all gotta start somewhere, and even I have to admit that even though I didnt make my characters using recolored images when I was young, as in I actually did draw them manually, I still can't say that they were at all original. Because I was like- 12. None of us made anything super original or groundbreaking at 12. I feel like stamps like these and the people who are hating on these kids arent giving them NEARLY enough patience and understanding. Literally no artist has the moral high ground here. We all sucked and needed a little help in the beginning.

I never really considered myself a recolor artist when I was little because I still drew my characters out on paper for myself and then just made recolors for fun, just to see if I could successfully turn one character into another. Sadly I dont have any of those old screencaps anymore bc I never uploaded them anywhere and back then I had no clue what an external hard drive was, but tbh I wish I did save them because I remember having a lot of fun making the canon characters into the characters I made, even if it did take me like- four hours. It was just an interesting art project since I wasnt prone to using bases or anything like that. I found it to be an interesting challenge at the time.

Obviously, if someone DID use recoloring as their foot in the door, I do feel like it is something they should grow out of after a while. Like if you arent drawing your own stuff already, at some point you've gotta take off those training wheels and actually learn to draw on your own without a base underneath, i.e. by using references and learning sketching/construction and doing studies instead of just coloring right over something. But I do understand why beginning artists do recolors and make unoriginal OC's. I'm not defending Recoloring as an actual art form. But I do understand why kids/beginners do this sort of thing and I don't see it as an inherently bad thing. Its just kids having fun and trying new things and using training wheels to try and figure things out, and theres always bound to be screw-ups or unoriginal ideas along the way. I dont think they should necessarily be punished or hated for that, bc one way or another they'll either learn and get better over time or just grow out of it entirely and move on at some point. It's just an innocent child thing.

Let the young'uns make their unoriginal characters. Critique kindly and with compassion, and understand that these are kids and sometimes this is just how some of them are starting out. Encourage them to improve and be supportive of their art journey. It would really suck to turn someone away from art because they got hated on or made fun of simply for making a recolor, when thats how many of us started to figure things out to begin with.

whoo this was a read, but after going through it tbh i completely agree with you! i made this stamp 9 years ago... i was 16, i'm 25 now and my outlook on this kinda stuff (and many things in relation to art in general) has changed a LOT. i mean... you bring up drawing over sonic X screenshots when this was the second thing i ever drew of this fc.... i definitely should have had a lot more compassion back then, as someone who came from the same origins :P but i was too busy going through my edgy phase LMFAO

recolors can be a good stepping stone, bases and the like too (though i have my own gripes with those) and i now encourage all young artists to take whatever steps they need to in order to keep creating! like.. i was like that at one point too, y'know? it'd be hypocritical of me to me anything less than supportive and understanding

recoloring and reposting peoples' personal art is of course always bad, definitely! but i did the same thing back in the day... my photobucket is full of sonic advance sprite edits and sonic x screenshot recolors i took as requests on forums LOL without that i wouldn't have done a lot of things that led me to where i am now, and i want other beginners to be able to have that experience too. especially for those making ocs, this kinda goes hand in hand with the whole "mary sue" stuff... let kids have fun and make their "unoriginal" ocs/fcs. hell, let adults do so too! art someone makes for fun shouldn't be scrutinized by every person on the internet

but! i wanted to say thanks for this comment, it's nice to see something refreshing like this, from someone who has the same sort of perspective as me as someone who's been drawing/on the internet for a long time ^^

lol oh wow I honestly wasn't expecting anyone to respond to this lol. XD This is super cool.

But yeah my dude I totally agree with you! Like I think I was around the same age when I faved this stamp, maybe a year or two younger (I didnt come onto DA until 2011 so this stamp was already old by the time I first found it), and now that I'm 20 I definitely feel like my viewpoint on recolors and mary sues and the like have all changed completely.

I'm honestly just at a point where I look at recolors like the one you just showed me and mary-sue OC's and all that stuff and just smile like a dummy because those just represent pure, adorable childlike happiness to me now. Like as long as these people are having fun, whether they're kids who are just starting out, or Adults who really dont care and just wanna have fun regardless of whether the character is "bad" or not, who am I to judge them? Let them be happy and be supportive anyway! As long as they're not taking and recoloring over an artist's personal artwork, I really dont see it as a negative thing.
I feel like it's an important skill to enjoy more and criticize less when it comes to stuff like this because I feel like you get a lot more gratification and joy out of things that way. ^^ You can always critique someone and encourage them to improve on their artwork without being cruel or judgmental.

In any case, you're very welcome! ^^ I'm glad I was able to throw a different perspective in here after all this time, especially if it brought a bit of joy into your day lol. Even if it was a bit long winded. I,D Sorry about that. ^^;

True. Most undertale OCs are just female sans or something. I feel like me and my friend are the only people to have an original species for our OCs. Mine is a fox named Cheril and hers is a raccon named Ginger.

OMG.
My sona used to be a black and purple Shadow recolor... with red eyes... emo bangs... a black studded collar... and white gloves with black studded bracelets. I was a slutty 11 year old with tits. I "dated" most of the Sonic... boys.

Now my sona is a sting ray... with actual decent colors, and powers, and isn't related to the canon cast at all unless I just decide to break the forth wall but that's only for comedy purposes. And I actually draw my stuff now. So yeah... all recolors suck unless it's a vector or a base ad you actually got permission. Other wise recolors are just stupid. :3

Grab a pencil and practice on paper not recolours the official artwork of Sonic Canon Characters. As I say, I always despite recolours. Those people who recolours are nothing but a brainless plonkers.

I think the thing that gets me mad over recolours is when the person who creates them thinks up this really unoriginal backstory
like, in short terms "They're a demon raised in Heaven, so they have both Angel and Demon powers, and they've been fighting with
their brother ever since they were little" and then they go and, if the story wasn't painful enough, way overpower them, and then
have the nerve to think that they're a really good character.

IKR! I hate how there so "overpowered". Man its really annoying! Think its bad here on Deviantart? Man, look on Google Plus! There is the one Fan Character who is litterally a light blue sonic and he has the powers of Goku. And his name is Gabe The Sayainhog...

Another sane person among the wilderness of dA XD
I can't agree more. I haven't looked at Google Plus, but
from the sounds of it... It's funny, I was just saying that
I hadn't seen anyone thinking their hedgehog was a saiyan
for ages, but looks like I was wrong. Man... The thing that bothers
me about it particularly is that it makes me wonder how that person
can "create" that character and then like it, when it's so clearly terrible..?

Yeah, i mean half the time the characters personality is either unknown, or the same as Sonic's. And then they add an unoriginal back story that's really cheesy. Plus they spam everyone talking about what there gonna do that day, or there telling everyone that there gonna leave forever, and then come back like the next day. Oh and I got a question...   Is sprite editing recoloring?

Yeap, story of the internet. Particularly with the "OMG you all hate me"
and the "I'll kill myself" journals, they annoy the god damn HELL out
of me. They're selfish, attention grabs, unjustified, and overall bullsh*t.
As for your question, it's an interesting thing. I've seen people who say
that it is, and some who say it isn't. Either way, there are perfectionists
who do sprites from 100% scratch, which can't be considered recolouring
because it's their own work completely, but then there's say people like
me, who take base sprites (Say, from Sonic Battle on the GBA) and edit them
into a new character, like what I did here fav.me/d7f1l4d
In a way, it's partially a recolour and partially original. I did the head, the clothes
and such myself, so I don't consider that a recolour because I made them from scratch.
It's partially recoloured, because I didn't make the arms or the tail say, they're
just their because of the base sprite. Basically, I don't consider sprite editing
as recoloring. I mean, it can involve recolouring, but if it's more than just that,
and you actually do edit it to make it unique, then it's not so bad. I mean, there are
a lot of people who do animations with their Sonic characters. I can garuntee that the sprites
used in those are edits of the premade sprites from Sonic GBA games, and there are
more still people who make the sprites but don't animate them. So, if editing is recolouring,
then most of us are recolours. But I personally don't think of it that way.
If it's just say, a sprite of Sonic or Mario but recoloured and then with say maybe wings or a tail,
I don't consider that edited enough to not be a recolour. I think a sprite needs to be edited
in all areas to make it different from a recolour. Not that it needs to be HUGELY edited, but
somewhat at least.
