Sebastian by RatPrince Sebastian by RatPrince
A tarot style watercolour and coloured pencil portrait of akitku's vampiric knight Sebastian. He's recently gone through some...changes in the comic The Change and I'm excited to see how his adventures continue in the future (check out this contest if you haven't already). I really enjoyed mixing coloured pencils and watercolour in this, and the slightly soft effect it achieved.

This is not my contest entry. I was...uhhh...going through my old notes and discovered that ages ago I was supposed to have made a few watercolour commissions which slipped my mind (there's another one in the works for Sleyf).
...
Yeah...

Beautiful! I like the tarot vibe I get from this, and the softness of the style.

This is perfection in a bottle! You did such a wonderful job with the tiniest of details - like the chain mail and rose petals - that it looks like and actual catholic saint's portrait I'd see in the church. BEAUTIFUL gift!!!

This is so beautiful! It could be a stained glass window! I love the way you've highlighted the wild and tangled flora and fauna in the foreground. The look of reverence on Sebastian's face is indeed, very saint-like and how did you get the halo around his head to be so radiant? It's fantastic!

Thank you! The plant bits were rather fun to draw :)
I used metallic watercolours for the moon/halo (which is nice in person but doesn't show up on the scan) so maybe that's just the effect of its contrast with the darker colours in the rest of the scene.

I think it's safe to say that you captured the card style really well while making it your own (those colours! Purple and blue is definitely your thing and makes it instantly recognisable as 'yours', but is also a colour set you'd never find in tarot style cards!). I love also that it has a 'religious icon' feel with regard to the manner in which figures were portrayed, with the halo - here a moon - and serene acceptance upon their faces, and I like both of those styles, so mixing them together, especially for this character and his story, was a clever choice!
I like how the 'beams' radiating outward are almost like embers or blood spay (lovely), and that you actually changed their colour in and outside of the moon just to add a bit more interest to the picture.
That poppy is so wonderful, it's beautifully textured! And I love the way the papery petals are curled, it's pretty pleasing lol, it makes me want to bite it (haven't you ever felt that way!)

Gorgeous composition and colours! I love how the combination of watercolours and coloured pencils gives just the right amount of texture. Sebastian looks great here, I like his pensive expression.

Thank you so much :)
It's a new combination for me and I've been enjoying experimenting with it.
Heh...I'd imagine he has a lot to think about given recent events in the comic X'D

:squee: Omigosh this is so awesome!!! And so wonderful to see it in full! Such a beautiful piece! I just love the tarot style with the border and the stylized moon/halo behind him. And those weaving poppies! So beautiful! Your combination of watercolour and coloured pencils works wonders! Also, it always amazes me how clean your watercolours are! I like how the image has this saintly vibe, but if you look closer the light emanating from the moon actually turns red and blood-like (at least that's how I interpret it!) Also, coloured lineart is such a brilliant idea! It looks awesome here! I could just sit and look at it all day! (You know, I had completely forgotten we talked of commissions once! Thank you so much for doing this anyway! It would only be fair if I paid for it now, do let me know your paypal address)

:happybounce: Yaaay! I'm so glad you like it!! :D
He's such a cool character (he grew on me a lot over the course of The Change) and I can't wait to see where his story leads next!

They've been a lot of fun to experiment with. For this one I went with a much tidier style (if that makes any sense X'D) that the ghost hollow one. Next time I'll probably try out this technique on hot pressed paper so I can have a bit more control over the texture of the coloured pencil. Yeah!! That's totally what I was going for (a misleading-at-first-glance kind of symbolism) but I didn't think it would be obvious enough to pick up on X'D
(No way! I forgot about this completely for such an age!!)

Gosh, I'm so happy to hear that! It really means a lot! I always worry about the main character syndrome, when the main character becomes annoying and kind of ruins the story. So I'm so glad he is likable!

Ah, hot-pressed paper is really nice to use. From my experience the only downside is that it can't take too many washes of watercolour so you can't go into really dark colours...but it might have just been me doing it wrong! Sweating a little...

Gosh, thank you! That's so kind of you!

He certainly is! :D I think that problem is most prone to occur when either a) the protagonist is always right/makes the right choices or b) they make the wrong choices but never suffer any consequences...neither or which is applicable to Seb XD

I'm rather excited to try the hot pressed paper out. I've just bought some really nice stuff and am itching to test it :D That's good to know.

:)
