Hmmm...I wonder how Möbius and company get around in daylight without ocular filters like Vinyl's glasses? Sure, the hood helps a bit, but what about Seeker?

Also: the title "A Revelation" sounds to me like Tavi and friends are about to hear the truth about Melody Song...

Okay. None of these ponies knew the cult was gonna end in mass murder, only that they helped ponies who were lost and gave them a place to belong, not that they bullied or threatened ponies into joining or likewise forcing them to stay. Only that Berry Punch had joined a new group and that was inherently bad. I wonder how they'll react when she joins the hippie ponies or Luna's witnesses.

Cults are inherently bad. I get the impression you don't know much about this topic. They don't usually end in mass murder, but the typical features of cults include mind-control techniques, the intentional isolation from friends and family, and complete dedication to the furtherance of the cult to the point of slavery. When someone joins a cult, it is not a “oh, have fun then” moment. It is a serious problem.

Neither have I. Let's start by examining the article's reliability:
The article sited is from a website that collects various articles from various sources, so it cannot be reviewed as a reliable source in itself. Looking up the name of the particular author in question, it is found that he is in fact prominent enough to have a Wikipedia article. It appears that he has had a somewhat checkered past, including at one point running a educational group about minority religions that was apparently shut down when he was accused of being too close to the particular religions he was defending. Five years ago, he published a book on Scientology that was criticized as being “unduly biased in Scientology's favor”. He clearly has a fringe view on the topic, and is neither considered an expert, nor representative of experts' views.

Now that we know the article isn't particularly trustworthy, we can examine its contents. After all, even an idiot will occasionally get it right.
“While the majority of minority religions are innocuous, many have been involved in social conflicts.”
I suppose this is the statement that is supposed to answer my question. But not only does it not give any examples (so you failed to answer my previous challenge), it asserts something without any evidence whatsoever. The author clearly takes it for granted, and expects us to trust him on the statement. Given the prior review of his reliability, I will not take his word for it, and consider assertions without evidence to be a point against him.

“Putting aside the technical discourse of sociologists… who exploit followers for their own gain.”
This has some merit. The word “cult” is often used as a slur against groups people don't like, without any reference to actual objective reasons. In addition, it has several different and generally vague definitions even if it is used in a more objective manner.

His following objections are silly, though. The next paragraph, instead of sticking to the valid point of cult-as-slur, he begins to confuse the different definitions of the word. There is a specific definition under which a cult is a group that self-identifies as a mainstream religion but rejects central doctrines of that religion: he is objecting to a completely valid definition, and possibly the most precisely defined one at that. He then compares it so a different definition, where cult means a group that is fervently committed to their beliefs beyond the level of the general population. This is a vaguer, but equally valid definition. He then falsely concludes by comparing these two different uses of the word that the word isn't defined well. The thing is, it is defined. He just failed to realize what was being said.

His next complaint is even more ridiculous. Practically nobody claims that a cult is a “false religion”. Calling something a cult does not imply that the people running it are intentionally deceptive or any such thing. He then bases the rest of his article around this silly definition of cult-as-false-religion, and how it should be defined differently. It already is defined differently, and his proposed definition, although much more rigorous than most, is in fact reflective of what most people mean when they use the word.

The real meat of this article clearly places the author in the ridiculous New Age relativism movement, exemplified when he dismisses potential ways to identify harmful cults because the same criteria also call prominent religions into question. That assumes that large religions like Christianity and Islam are not dangerous, and that a religious delusion started by a charismatic leader isn't automatically bad even if there isn't any immediate physical harm. Neither of these assumptions hold up, so his objection to the use of these criteria to identify harmful cults doesn't work.

In summary: The article is a fringe view that confuses definitions, doesn't provide any evidence to back up its assertions, and ultimately fails to answer my question anyway, since it was intent on defining harmful cults rather than showing that there are non-harmful ones.
