No Critique, Please... by RaptureCyner No Critique, Please... by RaptureCyner
"I understand that critique can help artists grow...

But I critique myself enough...

Please respect that I don't want any form you."

-----

I made this because I feel that people... mostly on deviantART, tend to be rude and mean about critique, and mad when artist don't want it.

Can't you all just respect that some people, like me, can't handle it? That when you point out something is wrong, they feel just terrible, like their day is ruined, that everything they worked for was pointless... even at the smallest mistake?

Please respect other peoples wishes.

Critique is not a bad thing, it can be wonderful. :)

But some people just don't want it, especially if they are already hard on themselves as it is.

I generally don't trust critique because I'm worried that people will say stuff that goes against my overall vision of my work. I also prefer to improve at my pace and besides I draw for myself and I don't live to please anyone with my art.

Just don´t pust your art on a public site!
'I don´t need critiques, I see every mistake by myself.' - You can see some of them, that´s right, but it´s always better to let others take a look too. And even if you see and know about all your mistakes - why do you continue doing them? You won´t ever make it in the creative industry, my friend. And if you´re doing art as your hobby, do you think it´s better to stagnate than to improve yourself? I can´t understand this childish and immature attitude.
Putting a stamp like this at your profile and don´t disable comments looks like forcing others to praise your work. The internet is not your safe spot and there´s freedom of speech, luckily.

If you can't take/handle critique, art may not be the best path to go. You need to grow thicker skin. I am extremely sensitive with everything, but I STILL take critique. I also find that I am hard on my art/style, yet it doesn't mean I don't need critique?? Criticism is necessary and you will always get it. If you don't take criticism you should have a better reason why. Watch atari's video about critique;

Then why post your artwork publically on an art-themed website where people discuss art? Getting critique and different opinions is pretty much unavoidable.

Yeah, but then what's the point of putting it online on a comment/forum based art website if you dont want to engage and/or read feedback anyway?

Well said. But personally, an artist who can critique their own drawings should be willing to listen to advice from others. If the artist doesn't want critique, that's perfectly fine; but I believe art communities are supposed to be the places where artists can advance further on their drawing skills.

I agree :3. It's absolutely awful that some people here aren't respecting your views in this and are arguing. We're all different. Some people are more sensitive than others, why can't people understand that?

Well I don't like critiques that much because people always judge how I draw my characters, pokemon, etc IN MY STYLE! I have my own unique style of how I draw and if people can't accept how I draw then they can just fuck off!We should have the right to draw how we want. Our art styles is what makes our art special!
If you think I sound like a total bitch when I'm saying all of this then so be it im a bitch!

Ah okay must be just me. I followed my teacher's feedback and went from a grade E to B in Maths. If I had continued to ignore the feedback I would have failed.

I usually give both compliments and critiques on a lot of art. (More so for the former, though.) Because I understand that it's important for artists to see how others see it to be able to both recognize their own good qualities and skills in art, as well as the opposite. Artists often have a hard time thinking outside of their own vision, this is the case for seeing art that they might think is entirely crap, or that they think it really good but needs a bit something extra they can't quite place..

If someone has a background that's too bright for the piece or some element is over powering, I'll mention it as well as point out other qualities they did well or compare it to a different piece the artist made that was visually a better composition in terms of background vs foreground. I, personally, haven't had a bad experience with giving some critiques, and most artists are happy to receive them and thank me for both the compliments and the critiques, because they appreciate an outside view that is constructive and helpful for them as artists. It gives perspective.

But, I understand some people can't handle any criticism very well, so I understand why a stamp like this exists. Even so, unless I see someone outright use something like this, I'm still going to give feedback because I've found it helpful for both the giver and receiver.

Though, I hope more artists realize that self criticism isn't always the best way to get it because it's often not constructive, and it isn't a great way to (as the stamp put it) "grow."

Because some people just upload their things to share them around with other people, not to see someone pointing all the mistakes you did. Some people just don't like that.
Isn't dA a place for sharing art?

criticism is the most impotent part of being an artist
and if people cant handle criticism they will go nowhere

you shoulden't act like people who give you criticism are evil. they are trying to help you

They'd just prefer to not have any criticism and just positive feedback; maybe they've had a bad experience with criticism in the past. It's not compulsory at all. A few people who have critiqued me have misunderstood the perspective of my artwork, which is dreadfully annoying, and the reason why I don't allow them.

if you are making Art for others enjoyment then you need viewer feedback to know how your art is perceived and if there is anything that will make the spectator have a better exspiriance, making you art worth more of their time.

This site is not specialised in helping artists improve by critiques. Some people
enjoy getting inspired with other's art or looking at stock images to identify what
they're getting wrong. Even a critique can be opinionated.

What even...???!

I personally just feel uncomfortable with it. I have self-confidence issues and bad situations with it in the past. Even with teachers.

So I usually don't accept them. I don't like it. There's nothing wrong with that??

Well.. then the internet is the wrong place to publish your work... in fact, you will never be able to publish your art anywhere. Deviantart is an open place for everyone to comment and critique. If you cant handle that, just turn your fucking comments off, you idiot. What do you expect people to do, just lick your ass about how amazing you are, pathetic...

That abusive language is completely uncalled for. For shame, this is exactly the kind of thing that brings people to the point where they feel the need to discourage criticism. Some people have intensely bad internal reactions to having others jump down their throats. It's not an artist's fault if they have thin skin, and everyone has a right to pursue happiness without being made into a nervous wreck. If the world isn't like that, all the more reason to try to carve out one's own corner of the world where it can be.

:icondefectorillustration:
Oh boy.. "abusive language". Hard to break it to you, but the internet is not your "safe space". If you carve a corner where people are supposed to just compliment you, deviantart is not a place for that. You know where that place is? At your home! Just show your stuff to your mom, im sure she will never say anything that could possibly be interpreted as "harsh" or "critical". She will just say "oh you drew that? aaaaw thats so nice". The internet is ruled by free speech. Also, it shows how weak you are, if you can not distinguish between a person giving a critique for an artwork you have done and a personal attack. My comment was aimed at the person, because it showed their lack off character and weakness. If nowadays, everybody is offended by everything, i have the right to be offended by weakness, dont i?

TLDR: Deviantart is not/was never desinged to be a save space, if you cant handle critique and are a thin-skinned weakling, DISABLE THE COMMENTS or dont upload everything.

You are a petty and spiteful person from what I've gathered. Noticeably, you call sensitive people and those who can not handle or dislike criticism 'weaklings', which is a naive thing to say for a person your age, and you clearly don't understand how other people feel; that needs to stop.

The text is too small...nah I'm just kidding. ;P

I can sort of relate. The only critique I can stand is in literature...but on art? There's just no real way to define that sort of thing. Literature? Oh yeah, your story should have good grammar, good use of paragraphs, it isn't boring and all that other fun stuff. Art? Um...make sure it doesn't look like shit?

I don't think I would put this on my profile but yeah I can see what you mean.

Well when critiquing art you can say, try to get steadier lines, less heavy shading, softer colors, stuff like that. It's not like the only way to critique art is to do your example.

It makes me sad that this mindset is so widely accepted on a site centered around art. Learning to separate yourself from your art and not take critique personally is an important lesson to learn. Anyone who is serious about art as a hobby or a career should learn this sooner rather than later.
