To Awaken A King by RaNuit To Awaken A King by RaNuit
Awarded 3rd Place

" And with a final cry to the worlds three, the king that once was falls to his knees. His blood now has spilt and the last ship does come, to carry the king of Avalon to the rest of beyond. Where doth the body of this great legend rest, thus there within dear Avalon's breast. Slumber shall he till the mists once more rise, the Pendragon stands guard, the King's sister to his side. " ( poem by me too )
....

This peice has taken me two weeks of painting. Hour upon hour I layered and loved to each stoke laid with the paintbrush upon my canvas. Painted traditionally in acrylic and upon 140 lb water color paper. No masking, no special anything, no computer editing... just straight old fashioned, one hundred percent non digital painting.

For the contest that :iconmizzd-stock:
is currently running. Using her stock Elven Maiden 5
as a basic guideline to paint by for proportions.

I am a huge Arthurian Legend fanatic. I love the images, the history of the writing, everything down to the Sacred Chalice Well. I am a Daughter of Avalon and even to this day believe she will come through the mists again.
The painting is of the final resting place of Arthur, the Pendragon clasping the stone that marks his grave. The Sacred Chalice Well symbol etched into the rock, Excalibur thrust into the ground above where Arthur rests, and his sister, The Lady of The Lake, Morigane casting the enchantments upon the sacred grave to bring the king once more to life... as it is time for Avalon to live again.

Dedication: I painted this with two people in my mind and heart. A lady I am proud to call sister, though she is not of my blood. And my love, whom without, I could honestly say I would be lost in the mists myself. Both these individuals are always there for me, always supporting me and I am so Blessed to know and have them in my life...

Wonderful detail work on this piece. Her hair especially is really well done.

No wonder you were so aware of the Egyptian symbols... you seem to know your way with the old glyphs :)

I just LOVE your piece of work. The detailed celtic border, the medieval illumination style, yet with a touch of fantasy. The colors are great.

I am a big arthurian legend fanatic too. I suppose you read Stephen Lawhead's Cycle of Pendragon Serie ?

thank you so much! I'm glad you like it. Sorry no I haven't read that particular series, I am more the Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. But I am a huge Arthurian Legends and Myth fanatic. I will have to look into getting his books and reading them, thanks for the suggestion.

No problem !

I haven't read the Zimmer Bradley ones.... I heard a little of it and I think I won't like it XD I'm not a courtois King Arthur style lover.... Give me alll the Mabinogion, and celtic based Arthur ! The recent movie also was not too bad ! In fact, I love to yell : Guinevere, never with Lancelot was !

:stab: lol, the legend had sooo many transformations through the time :p

nods, it does have a lot of variations through the centuries. The Zimmer books are actually not too bad, they focus more to the isle of Avalon and the whole of the Morrigan then anything. They are a decent read.

I loved those books. But I liked Mary Stewart's take on the legend more. "The Crystal Cave", "The Hollow Hills", "The Last Enchantment", "The Wicked Day" If you love the story, I highly recommend them. :)
