This page has been pretty barren for a while, so I wanted to upload some older stuff.
This is batch one of the draft designs I made years ago for the flag of the Terrestric Republic (i.e. Earth) in my fictional universe. The design I am canonically using at the moment is the one in the middle.
One big problem I always had with other people’s Earth flag designs is that they very often try to represent way too much at once. Those are the kinds of flags that incorporate fifty different colours, or show Earth’s position in the solar system, or include a complete and detailled world map, or – heaven forbid – just decide to smash together the flags of all the nations in the world into one giant tablecloth. I hate that approach to inclusive design, trying to represent everything and everyone by being as specific and complex as possible. It’s not going to work out in the end, folks. Believe me.
Instead what I have tried to do is create a motif that has nothing to do with the infinite variety of human culture, because there is no way in hell that’s all going to fit on one flag. The central element of most drafts is the astronomical symbol for Earth, which isn’t really universal, but I thought would be more interesting than just a solid blue circle. The idea is that the rays of the sun (yellow) hit Earth, thus creating life (green), which then spreads throughout the galaxy. This probably works best with the central design, where the sun shines from the left and the life “radiates” away to the right so to speak.
I’m not really a fan of the white background, however, so I might switch to using the bottom center design instead in the future. The white also doesn’t really represent anything, at least not anything that the entire world population could reasonably be expected to agree with.
