I have now set up a dedicated print shop at zenfolio.com. The benefit of this site is that they use a variety of print on demand vendors located in the USA, UK, and Australia, which means that shipping costs are kept to a minimum.

I am going to continue to add more images to the site, and if there any pieces you would like to see as prints please ask and I'll upload them.

A good number of you seem to be particularly interested in seeing my process, which I share on Facebook through a sequence of ‘walkthrough’ photographs. I am just about to embark upon a new painting that is being created for the ‘Lands and Legends’ artist anthology. As the piece is creator owned, and thus exempt for the NDA (non disclosure agreement) I am usually bound by, it seems a perfect opportunity to share that process as I am actually doing it.

My facebook page: www.facebook.com/Ralph.Horsley…

Over the next few days that it takes to complete the painting I will be posting my progress adding some explanation as I do so. The subject matter is Tír na nÓg. Here is a short passage from Wikipedia:

‘In Irish mythology and folklore, Tír na nÓg ([tʲiːɾˠ n̪ˠə ˈn̪ˠoːɡ]; "Land of the Young") or Tír na hÓige ("Land of Youth") is one of the names for the Otherworld, or perhaps for a part of it. It is depicted as a supernatural realm of everlasting youth, beauty, health, abundance and joy.[1] Its inhabitants are the Tuath Dé, the gods of pre-Christian Ireland.[1] In the echtrae (adventure) and immram (voyage) tales, various Irish mythical heroes visit Tír na nÓg after a voyage or an invitation from one of its residents. They reach it by entering ancient burial mounds or caves, or by going under water or across the sea.[1]

Tír na nÓg is best known from the tale of Oisín and Niamh.[2]

In the tale,Oisín in Tir na nÓg, Oisin is visited by a fairy woman called Niamh Chinn Óir (Niamh of the Golden Hair or Head, one of the daughters of Manannán Mac Lir, a god of the sea) who announces she loves him and takes him away to Tir na nÓg ("the land of the young", also referred to as Tir Tairngire, "the land of promise"). Their union produces Oisín's famous son, Oscar, and a daughter, Plor na mBan ("Flower of Women"). After what seems to him to be three years Oisín decides to return to Ireland, but 300 years have passed there. Niamh gives him her white horse, Embarr, and warns him not to dismount, because if his feet touch the ground, those 300 years will catch up with him and he will become old and withered. Oisín returns home and finds the hill of Almu, Fionn's home, abandoned and in disrepair. Later, while trying to help some men who were building a road in Gleann na Smól lift a stone out of the way onto a wagon, his girth breaks and he falls to the ground, becoming an old man just as Niamh had forewarned. The horse returns to Tir na nÓg. In some versions of the story, just before he dies Oisín is visited by Saint Patrick. Oisín tells the saint about what happened and dies.[3]

I found the story of Niamh and Oisin particular evocative, and whilst my initial temptation had been to show the idyllic land of Tír na nÓg I quickly became drawn to the idea of showing the lovers galloping over the waves; with Tír na nÓg still just a dream yet to be properly discovered or fully realised.

After a series of thumbnail sketches I arrived at a composition I was happy with and worked up the line sketch.

www.facebook.com/media/set/?se…

Whilst the story is about Niamh and Oisin it is also about the primal force of nature and magic so I wanted that to be reflected. The figures are prominent, but placed in the mid ground so as to be within the environment rather than dominating it. The horse, Embarr, is oversized with foaming sea for tail and mane both of which emphasise its ‘otherness’. The sea and sky are major presences.

The next step was to work up a colour study, which I did digitally.

www.facebook.com/media/set/?se…

The intense saturated colours are saved for the magical elements and give focus to Niamh and Tír na nÓg offset against the somber tone of the sea.

I hope you find my progression interesting, and I look forward to providing updates as I paint.

You can get yourself a fantastic deck of playing/tarot cards, and also some of my original artwork through backing this kickstarter project:

www.kickstarter.com/projects/1…

I have teamed up with Alessio Cavatore, a leading game designer (whose credits include working on Warhammer) to produce a very playable new card game based upon the Tarot, but working like a playing card deck. I have already produced quite a few pieces of artwork for the game, and am looking forward to painting the rest, once you've backed the campaign.

This is an exciting project for me as it has allowed me to explore an aspect of my work I don't always get a lot of chance to develop, namely a detailed, design based, graphical approach, which aims to capture a traditional playing/tarot card feel but with a contemporary twist. The artwork is made using acrylic wash and line work to help with that feel. Another fun part is that all the images need to work 'mirrored', which creates it's own unique and dynamic look.

The suits are based around the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire, and Ice and each has their own fantastical take on the more usual King, Queen, Jack, etc. Additionally they relate to their Tarot equivalents of wands, cups, etc, whilst I will also be producing cards for all the Tarot Major Arcana.

Here's the Queen Of Ice;

Queen Of Ice by RalphHorsley

This Kickstarter has some unique incentives, including the chance to own some of the original Artwork, or even have me create a card based upon your own request.

It is worth following the link anyway if you'd like to see videos where I talk about my work, and show off some of the paintings stored in the spare room!

Thanks,

Ralph

I don't usually enter art competitons, but this is one is by the good folks at Infected By Art. It would be great if you could go and vote for my entry, I'd love to get in the book, and better still win one of the cash prizes. Hey, maybe you could enter yourself!

Card Signing.

I am very happy to sign the cards I have created for both Magic the Gathering, and the World of Warcraft tcg. I already receive cards in the post for this purpose, and I don't charge for this service.

All I do ask is that you provide me with an SAE, and the cost of postage. As I am UK based I do not expect anyone from a different country to provide postage stamps, but instead will accept either concealed UKú or US$ to cover the cost of returning the cards. US$5 is quite sufficient for this purpose.

Please note me for address details.

I also have white-backed artists proofs available. For both WoW and Magic I am given 50 cards that are printed with a white back, rather than the usual logo. There are never more than the 50 per set, and only the artist recieves them. These are available to buy at UKú5/US$10 each, and not only will they be signed, but I will do a free sketch on the back of your choosing.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Lords of Waterdeep

Fri Apr 13, 2012, 5:37 AM
The Dungeons and Dragons board game 'Lords of Waterdeep' has just been released. I had the great pleasure of working on the cover, which I have already shared here
Lords of Waterdeep by RalphHorsley
but additionally I created all the art for the cards depicting the 'Lords' themselves.

Waterdeep is the major city within the Forgotten Realms setting and the 'Lords' are a self styled secret cabal who try to run the city their way, and hopefully for everyone's good.

I wouldn't normally post so many images in one go, but it would seem unfair to favour anyone Lord over another...

I had great fun creating these portrait shots, which needed to ocnvery strong, distinct, characters in a quick, readable way.

The game is a also great fun, easy to pick up first time around it is a eurogame-style worker placement, resource management type.

Illie Award semi-finalist

Mon Sep 5, 2011, 5:59 AM
My Neverwinter painting
Neverwinter by RalphHorsley
has been nominated for the Illie Award 2011, and has made it through to the semi finals.

I am very happy to find myself alongside some very esteemed artists. You can see all the nominations here www.illuxcon.com/image/tid/2 and anyone can vote. Interestingly the voting is done by rating each piece 1 to 5, then those with the best aggregate score make it into the final.

Please head over to the Illuxcon site and vote.

Web Shop Launch

Mon Feb 7, 2011, 4:52 AM
I am very fortunate in working traditionally in that not only do I enjoy the process, but I also end up with an original painting at the end of it. I have a large number of paintings that I have produced over the years, and whilst these have always been available for sale I have done little to promote them beyond taking them to shows.

I am intending for that to change as I have now opened a new online shop: www.etsy.com/shop/ralphhorsley

I have deliberately put up a range of pieces, both in terms of size, and cost; the lowest price being only $30.

I hope you will stop by for a browse, menawhile you can also read more about the ideas behind it at my blog:ralphhorsley.blogspot.com/2011…

Focal Points

Fri Oct 1, 2010, 8:17 AM
I have just created a new blog entry ralphhorsley.blogspot.com/ in which I showcase a couple of pieces of new artwork, whilst discussing how I try to create focus in my paintings, and lead the viewers eye.
