RakogisPapercraft has started a donation pool!
31 / 2,000
If you like my papercrafts, feel free to throw me a few points.

I have little interest in core membership (if I got it on one account, because of OCD, I'd have to get it on my other two); the points are mostly for contest prizes and gifts.

You must be logged in to donate.

I'm a simple writer of stories, programmer, papercraft builder/designer, and gamer from the Philadelphia area.

This is my alt account, exclusively dedicated to papercraft. My main account is :iconwhiterakogis:. Check it out for my stories, poetry, and other art.

I have been papercrafting for over five years, and I also design my own patterns. I find creature models to be the most interesting to build, especially Pokemon and Digimon.

A few things you should know about me:

- I have social anxiety issues, even in online communication. I can hold a conversation, but I have difficulty starting one. If you think I'm ignoring you, just talk to me.
- I do not use the favourites feature - I prefer more meaningful ways of giving feedback, like commenting or watching.
- I very much appreciate every comment and watch I get.
- I always return llamas.
- I will never direct share a papercraft model I didn't design, ever, no exceptions. I will, however, be more than happy to help you find a model.
- I dislike sharing my patterns privately, as I fear this can lead to hackers and theft. I'd really rather you didn't ask.
- I do release my models publicly - these can be downloaded at…, but I'm still in the process of getting them all up.
- I will consider any requests, but no promises.
- Yes, I am insane.

Hello to everybody.  I hope you all had a merry Christmas.  Or happy Hanukkah. Or Kwanzaa.  Or Festivus.  Or today-is-not-a-holiday day.  Whatever it is you celebrate.

So, 2018 is almost over.  And as far as my papercraft is concerned, I'll be the first to say this was not a good year - to put it mildly.  Rule #147 says "If you try to fight too many battles at once, you will lose them all."  This is a rule I definitely feel I should have followed this year.

As I wanted Paperthon 3 to be big, I knew I needed more prize models.  I knew I needed to start making them early.  I started with Monodramon, which I got finished early, so I thought I was in good shape.  Then came a series of obstacles - an unexpected (and entirely unnecessary) work trip in mid July, the printer breaking unexpectedly, leaving me unable to build anything until I was able to figure out the problem and get the replacement toner.

And all this is on top of just having moved into a new place at the start of the year and some other particularly stressful incidents at work.  In the midst of the chaos, I began to feel stressed about getting everything done right - like it was more an obligation than something I was doing for fun, and as a result, my motivation slipped.  As per rule #97, "The more you need to do something, the less you want to do it."

After Paperthon 3, I realized that I have to get back to basics, which I started to do with the simpler models I'd built after Paperthon 3.  I had to focus on the feel of the paper being shaped, the model taking form, and ultimately being posted and displayed - not promises or obligations.  And that, my friends, shall be my new years resolution for 2019.

For starters, right now, I'm finishing a design of Kunemon.

Kunemon by RakogisPapercraft

This was a design I started a couple years ago, that I eventually put aside half-finished in favor of more interesting projects.  As I look at the model as I left it off, it should be a simple design.  All it needs is a bit of poly reduction and separating the feet, and it should be ready to unfold.  I know this isn't a particularly interesting model, but I chose this one for its simplicity - to hopefully help me regain the right mindset, and remember rule #254 "You can’t play too hard, or else it’s just work."

So what else does this mean for me going forward?
  • No major end of year project for me this year, like I had Acerola last year and Zhuqiaomon the year before.  I had a couple candidate projects I was working on, but they'll be put on hold until next year.
  • After Kunemon, I will no longer be showing any work-in-progress pictures or revealing any of my projects until they are completed.  I know WIP pics may be interesting, but posting one makes me feel a bit more obligated to complete it, which goes against what I'm working for here.
  • Paperthon 4?  As it looks right now, barring me getting seriously lucky finishing designs, and/or getting a couple very generous donors, I don't think I'll do another paperthon in its current form.  In 2019, I may just hold a smaller building contest in August instead, to try and unlock the remaining prize models for public release, or something like that.
  • Commissions?  Once I finish Kunemon, I aim to finally finish my lingering commission projects - they too have suffered because of the chaos of 2018, and nobody's more frustrated about this than I am.  As of right now, I am closed, closed, closed for commissions until these are completed.  And once they are completed, I plan to be way fussier about what projects I'm willing to take going forward.
  • Presentations?  My convention appearances have always just been pure fun.  Nothing will change here.
  • Videos?  I've got a couple videos on my backup hard drive, that are ready to upload, and a few others half-edited.  Though I'll wait to get more so I can upload Rakogis's PaperTips Season 2 on a regular schedule.  As these get completed as I'm working, I don't expect anything to change here.
So that is the story with me.  Thanks for stopping by.
