As a self-taught artist, I often struggle with being able to see the flaws in my own anatomy. I can tell something isn't right but can't quite put my finger on what is wrong with it.
So today I decided to study figure drawing as well as improve my own cel-shading technique. And while I was doing my figure drawings I came up with the best way to critique my own art.
Sadly this technique only works for figure drawing studies and style studies.
1.) The first step is to trace the figure from the photo.
2) The second step is to try to reference both the photo and the trace.
3.) The third step is to now overlay the trace with the reference sketch.
Now you can easily see all the flaws.
4.) keep the overlay of both the trace and reference sketch as a guide to show what you need to improve on and start the figure drawing all over again.
