My Brilliant Career

"Don't you ever dream there's more to life than this?" Sybylla, "My Brilliant Career".

This piece was inspired by the 1901 novel ”My Brilliant Career”, by Australian author Miles Franklin (Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin (1879–1954)), and by the 1979 movie of the same name starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill. [link]
I started working on this piece ages ago, but never got around to finishing it until now. Not feeling especially well tends to make me fairly nostalgic. I grew up perhaps twenty minute’s drive from the landscape that inspired Ms Franklin’s novel, and now that I live on the North coast of Tasmania, I couldn’t be further from the dusty, bone-dry plains of the Riverina area of New South Wales that I remember.

The Synopsis:

Sybylla is a young woman with big dreams of becoming a well-known writer. She lives in the outback of Australia with her family struggling with the drought and monetary problems. Her journey to finding her self and making the hardest choices of her life begins when her mother says she can’t afford to keep her and sends Sybylla to her rich grandmother's house where she learns to love. But instead of pursuing love and becoming a rich housewife as expected, Sybylla does not wish to give up her big dreams of becoming a distinguished writer. She chooses a 'brilliant' career over love and getting married, getting a book published in 1901. (Source: [link])

I'd like to read it. I wonder how autobiographical it is.

I too have been feeling homesick. Fall where I grew up was a riot of colors. The crisp smell of falling leaves permeates the air...

The picture is perfect. I'd read the book just looking at it! :D

She claimed that it wasn't, but I'm not sure I believe that. The book is an Australian literary classic, and well worth reading. If you're feeling a little lazy though, watch the the movie instead. It is marvellous! "We of the Never Never" is another amazing novel that was made into a movie. Sublime.

Being where you are, I imagine that Autumn is a non-event, as it is here. You'll get back there one day, my sweet.

Yes, autumn here is pretty blase. I shall look up the movies on Netflix, and see if I can find them in print on Amazon or ebay.

Ooh! I love this one. Just beautiful!
The story sounds great, too. For her to continue on pursuing a writing career in that era is especially remarkable, when I'm sure women were expected to be wives and little else.
