Step 1
Pick up a pencil

Step 2
Draw

IT'S REALLY THAT SIMPLE

Babyshout by Ragadabah

I keep on seeing these big blogs on tumblr that list something like 18 tip on how to be an artist which always seem 'feel good', 'super critical' or 'horribly contradictory'. When your looking for art tips just remember that artists (and people) can only really talk from personal experience so get tips from a wide variety of sources. People are going to tell you different things, a lot of it's going to be bullshit but sometimes there's nuggets of golden wisdom. How do you sort out the wisdom from the poo? Experience! If I ever have any general tips for people it's 'practice, practice, practice!' If you don't know what to draw just copy a photo or go outside and draw a.... tree?!

Oh and one more thing, if you decide to try writing because your bad at drawing just remember writing's also a skill and it requires the same amount of practice. To be honest it's probably more of a skill than drawing. If you want to write it should be because you love writing and not because you can't draw.

Any questions?

So simple, yet so rarely followed.

You lost me somewhere around the first step.

Seriously, though, I feel if I can make something vaguely like what I was trying to draw then anyone can

I've been spending several months with how not-simple writing is. And I'm still looking back over my work and planning rewrites.

Yeah whenever I try write anything I always end up flipping a table and setting everything of fire. Comics and animations still elude me because of this.

Joking aside though, it is interesting how writing a good story follows a similar style to drawing a good picture. You need a layout (A sketch), you need to play about with it to make sure it stays coherent and is actually will be something worth reading (Composition and framing skills), you need to fill in the structure (Inking), then actually write the main text that the reader will read (Lay down the colours, do shading), finally there will be the finishing touches and consistency checks, as well as second opinion.

And just like with drawing, there are people who write who don't get that. And also just like with drawing, there are people who are bad due to inexperience who are still obviously learning, and there are people who are bad who are oblivious to this and don't improve at all.

I don't think one inevitably needs a ''sketch'' to writing (some do), but that's a whole nice comparison.

I think practically any creative endeavour worth doing will follow a similar process.

I love writing, and I write. But I suck at drawing. And I lack discipline... and practice. I think I write because I'm confident that I can write (Well, confident that I believe I can have some style... I think... lol...) ... and... because I studied writing.

I'll be honest... I think that if I would be a more patient person, I'd practice drawing more. I think I have the impression drawing can take a lot of time. My impatience cause me something horrible about drawing:

Vicious circle: Having the impression drawing takes a lot of time = lazy to practice = no practice = not improving = drawing takes indeed a lot of time = having the impression drawing takes a lot of time...

Well anyways... Yeah folks, don't do like me.

But recently I've subscribed to a drawing course to give me courage... And a certain kick in the butt. But I know it won't do the job for me, that I have to create some job for myself. Anyways, we'll see how it'll be. ;P

Hey Raga, nice little pic, up there. :D I didn't know you had a wife and kid. Great mysteries unveiled subconsciously by drawing... lol joke. (Or not...?)

Well interesting subject to talk about, learning how to draw. :)

No I don't have a wife and kids, I just wanted to illustrate me shouting at people ;p
Anyway, I think if you have the patience to write you'd have the patience to draw. Studying writing will obviously help you be more confident at writing and doing drawing classes will help you be confident with drawing. I used to lack confidence with drawing and then I decided not to care so much.
