His scales glitter like sunlight on water, and he travels from city to city on his own, for none can withstand his enchanting music.

I love this picture. I really do.

I also find bards to be amazing characters. Wandering the land for as far as they can go, learning of the world around them, always at home and welcomed by everyone.

As for Fantasy Bards, I see them as fighting smarter, not harder.

I recently started playing D&D and I picked the Bard without a second thought. They may say that Bards are underpowered, but I have yet to regret my decision. In fact, I'm lasting longer than our party's Sorcerer. I had to save him twice with my healing spells. I'm not one for singing, but I'm a pretty decent writer. In fact, I've been keeping rather accurate logs about our party's adventures so far.

I'm actually thinking about writing some stories involving my Bard. One thing I know for sure--and I decided on this before I saw this pic--his teacher of the bardic ways is going to be a shapeshifted Gold Dragon who will up and leave him the moment he thinks he's properly trained... or whenever they need to pay the food bill.

Once again, great picture.

Bards always make me weak in the knees. This one in particular. Art this good makes me wish I knew more about art, so I could leave the sort of long, thoughtful comment it deserves.

:giggle: Bards are one of my favorite classes. They're really underrated.

It seems to be related to the idea that knowing music and history is elitist. Plus, most bards in mainstream stories tend to be foppish wimps. Which is completely unfair to a rogue-class character. D:< This bard, on the other hand--I get the feeling that no one would have the guts to underrate him. In addition to the wings and the tail (and the fangs and claws that probably go with them), he's ripped like Jesus. Not someone to mess with.

(Side note on bard'dom: have you seen "The Heroic Legend of Arislan"? Not only is the animation gorgeous, but Gieve is one of the coolest bards, ever.)

Another thing is that the power of charisma and respect(as bards in ancient times had), is often very overlooked by people. In ALL of Europe, bards were treated with the same respect accorded to a king. They were celebrities, but with the power of law and tradition behind them.

In fantasy, add the power of magic to influence someone even more, you should have a hell of a powerful character.

Heroic Legend of Arislan was awesome. One of the first animes I've ever seen(I have volume two of the manga in Chinese).

Exactly. I remember being fascinated with bards and troubadors when I was learning about European history, for the very reasons you're giving. And the combo of such prestige and magical abilities should yield a character more than capable of holding his own--certainly he'd be a lot more versatile and complex than the average melee-fighter.

Could you be any more awesome? :excited: Usually, I have to trick people into watching Arislan, because they are under the mistaken impression that any anime made before 2000 is of poor quality.

If I ever make a video game or something, you can be sure the bardic class will be AWESOME for once. :salute:

 I like alot of old anime, like Record of the Lodoss War, Twin Signal, etc.

I want to watch Arislan again now. It's been years.
itainohime's avatar
I'll remember you said that.

That's because older anime is fantastic. Granted, it's not as plasticine and shiny as the newer stuff, but most of it more than makes up for it in plotlines.

I love the color you did him, that blue if fabulous.
He looks better this way than the sketch I think, which is odd, because i am a big fan of sketch art.
Wonder who he is serenading?

What's he sing about? I guess he'd know a lot better stories about dragons than a human bard anyway. xD

:giggle: Maybe he's singing about dragon heros killing knights?

Okay, the sketch of this was awesome, but the finished version radiates brilliance! It's just so well done, and it's not like you see this sort of thing very often. Definitely original, and definitely well done.
