Arc of Light

My Independent Study painting midterm, using the terrific stock by vishstudio located here vishstudio.deviantart.com/art/… (used with permission).  I wanted to combine my Figure Drawing class with my Painting class. I also wanted to just have fun with it and use my own painting style, so I kept it pretty gestural with thick paints and little-to-no blending. Monochromatic black and white over a Burnt Umber toned canvas. There are still some gaps but it's a lot more closed up than it was at first!

What really struck me about this piece was the extreme aesthetic power in the anatomical arc and the empty black space. This, combined with the dramatic lighting and excellent physique, made for an interesting and effective experimental anatomy study, I think. I wanted to give it a personal flair so I decided to crop it and make it a little tighter compositionally, as well as emphasize the diagonal linear qualities of the image.

Hopefully I can get a better photo of it before long. If I do, I'll be sure to update.
