My award-winning grad film from my master's degree is now up online. It’s another one of those angsty student film about struggling to deal with society, anxiety and all that, although illustrated in pretty watercolor animation.

Feel free to give it a watch, maybe it will contribute towards the 1k/4k new Youtube requirement >.>

WHAT A WAY TO START OFF 2018 by RadenWA

tl;dr Youtube is going to kick out (demonetize) creators who don’t have 1k subs and 240k watch time by the end of this month.

My Channel right now is at 500 subs and 200k watch time, so if you could be so kind to help me, please simply watch some of my videos, subscribe and perhaps share this post or my videos around if you are comfortable doing that.

>>THIS IS THE LINK TO MY CHANNEL<<

The screenshot above, btw is from my 2012 award-winning animation about (vintage) memes and cats. Check it out if you haven't watched it! And if you enjoyed watching it, chances are you’ll enjoy my other videos too!

Unfortunately, this film took me a year to make, which is precisely the kind of content that is discouraged with this Youtube change, as they prefer you to upload some shitty 10-minutes vlog every day. So I’ll see if I can survive through this ordeal, otherwise I guess I’ll have to just accept that quality, time-consuming content truly has no place in Youtube.

Hi everyone! Sorry about the recent inactivity, but now that I have finally been detached from any form of academic institutions (a.k.a graduated), it's time for me to make my contribution to society while remain living doing that. And somehow, I ended up working with my sister's friend's brother who is working on a pretty nifty game.

Valzbannr by RadenWA
Here's a banner I made for them. My role in the studio (of 4 people) is as the animator. So no, I won't be making any drawings for them since they already got an illustrator. But basically what it means is that the illustrator designs all these super rad monster designs and I get to rig and make them move like they do in the banner above. Yes, the whole thing is 2D ;)

The game itself is a cross between Rhythm and RPG game. So it's basically a rhythm game but with characters, bosses, skills and story and all those good stuffs. Also the game has such edgy grunge aesthetics which I feel is pretty cool.

So if you are into rhythm/RPG and wants both somehow, or if the thing just looks interesting to you, feel free to like/comment/share/subscribe on the trailer above or on the studio's facebook page! . If you want to try the beta as well let me know and I can send you access once we got the beta ready. Hopefully the game can be released by the end of 2017.

Sorry about this sudden promotion, but this is my first actual commercial project so I just want to make sure it gains as much exposure as it could. So thanks for the attention ~

HEY GUYS

After a long period of sleepless nights (of mainly worrying and mulling over) I have finally made my webcomic debut in Tapastic:

The Boy Who Tries.

~My Tapastic Webcomic Banner~ by RadenWA

While my poll result leans more towards a more plot-driven story, comments I receive favors more of a slice-of-life individual strips with punchline, so I decided to start off with that first, while I prepare my other serious, plot-driven one in the background and make it in the future hopefully once I have built enough audience in that site.

For now I have uploaded these old ones from 2011 (which is like 5 years ago omg),
REALITY. by RadenWA
and I just made a single new one which I may upload here maybe later, because I want to make it exclusive to Tapastic for now ;)

(While I have a number of video-game related comics here, I don't think I will be able to upload them in Tapastic because of their inconsistent style, so those ones will remain here in DA.)

SO feel free to go check it out through the link, do subscribe if you think it got potential, it's free and you do need an account to subscribe but you can also log in via facebook google and such. I hope you'll help support me with this new thing I'm trying! X3

Hi guys.

Lately I have been thinking of other ways I could earn money.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'd do illustration commission anymore as the income is just not worth it. With my "style", I could probably only charge 50$ max. Compare it to logo designers, who can already make up to 200$ per logo at an entry level. And I assure you, we would spend the exact same amount of time for each piece. (except for fussy clients, but for them you'd charge hourly).

So I'm thinking, since I have been specializing in animation anyways, what about an animation commission? I've gotten used to it to the point that I can make it as easily as I make a full illustration, yet it will be logical to charge more for it as it is technically multiple images.

However I have not seen a single animation commission happening, at least in DA that I know of. So I just try to figure out what the rates should be. I figured the fairest way to price of an animation is to price per frame, by that I mean each frame where the picture changes. Because if you know animation, a duration never have a set amount of frames - a second of animation can have either 24, 12, 8, or even 4 frames - not to mention held frames.

So say, for lineart only, I'd charge 10$ per frame. For basic flat color (and some cel shade) 20$, for fully painterly rendered, 30$ per frame. Now to make the prices clear, let's take some example from my gallery....

ZOMG RUN by RadenWA
This loop of a running wolf boy actually only consists of 8 frames. If this was lineart, it will only cost 80$! This example is fully painterly rendered tho, so it actually costs 240$. By then I barely compete with an entry-level freelancer graphic designer.

Another, bigger example would be this:
Epik Punch by RadenWA
Try to guess? It actually only consists of 25 frames. It goes longer because at the end he is just standing there with camera shake and wind loop. As it is rendered painterly, it does cost a whooping 750$. But had it been lineart, it'd be 250$, or cel shade, 500$

Though, I don't think anyone would be so bold to commission more than like 10 frames of loop. Looping animation goes a long way and can be used in games, website design and anything that facilitates gif.

I would have to also factor character complexity.....a blob or a cupcake hopping around definitely shouldn't cost that much to be animated in full painterly color. Background should be fine if it is static or just panned, but if it is animated, then it should be paid separately.

So now I just wonder, would this be viable? Is it fair? I understand this pricing will scare most of you, heck, it scares ME! Paying 500$ for a single artwork, I can never picture even myself doing that! But then remember most of us are all teen to young adults with monetary limitations. But there might be a very few amongst us who are more monetarily talented and find these prices fair? Though whether it's fair or not, more importantly -

Would anyone even be interested in commissioning me like this?

I understanding that drawing animu stuff will lead you to nothing but monetary disappointment, but right now I'm just trying to figure out whether it is actually possible or not to actually make decent money out of this skill I have. At the end, obviously I am ready to leave behind all this passion and get into graphic design or VFX which, even at the lowest level will still obviously pay much much better than whatever I struggle to make right now.

It's yet another shot done for Seven Star Re-animate. All these collab projects really encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone and try out animating techniques I just improvise on the spot. Also, I keep getting shots with female characters for some reason, and boy who knows that I'm actually really good at making sassy female poses.

Also textured smokes are inspired by Kill la Kill. Gosh Kinagase is such an adorable dude. I want to be buddies with him.

Still haven't got an employer, my short film is still 70% done and still not sure about my future.

I made it

If you remember ages ago there's this project called Moon Animate Make Up where animators re-animate an entire episode of Sailor Moon, one shot per each animator.

Well now there's a successor, but instead of Sailor Moon they do it with Dragon Ball. It's called Seven Star Re-Animate And here's my shot.

It kinda contains nudity so be warned

Just letting you know that I am still alive.

Aside from my Master's grad film, which is still not finished yet, I'm also required to read a bunch of weird bombastic arty books and make a thesis. But it will be practice-based, so I'll still be making stuff as part of the research. Hopefully stuffs that will assist the completion of the film as well.

Also if I can't find an employer by the end of this semester I would be kicked out of this country. What a life.

EDIT: This summer break I bought the Macbookpro with "Retina Display" thing. I was fine at first but after around a week my eyes began to feel really sore, strained and photosensitive. I wonder if it just needs to adjust to this new "super sharp" resolution and will get better in the future. Hopefully it won't lead to any issues.

Has any of you experienced this kind of thing with anything "retina display"? Might be great if I can hear some other's opinion and experiences.

-------------------

Other than the trip to USA taking away MOST of my productive time this summer break, I also finally got around playing ORAS, which kept me company throughout the vacation!

So I made a secret base! Anyone wanna add me go ahead. It's not like artistic or wow or anything. But it's still.....something.

Happy new year! By the end of this year I should already have a stable job to keep me staying in Australia otherwise I'm screwed and would probably consider taking a more prospective career like Construction.

Hey, how's everyone with Christmas? I got food poisoning for two days. What a delightful Christmas present from Santa!!

BUT THAT IS NOT IMPORTANT.

Shortly after New Years my family will drag me all the way to Orlando, Florida, USA, because it has Universal Studios and Disney World and thought it would help me forget how sad and hard my life is. Well it would, except for the fact that 24 hours straight in an airplane might drive me crazy in the process!

SO!

If any of you my watcher/watcheds happen to be around Florida or SF (which we will also visit), do gimme a shout, inform me, who knows we might be able to meet for a few hours or something.

Regardless, I wish everyone an eventful new year.

So, I kinda did my first paid job yesterday.

But hang on, you'd say "but you've done commissions and opening table in cons those are kinda jobs too right?"

Well it's kinda different and I'll tell you why.

As I'm starting to babycrawl into "professional life", there is one thing that I keep being asked about whenever I present stuffs to people.

"How long did it took you to make?"

At first I thought it was just a random curiosity, or for people to feel better because they can probably do it faster than I did.

Well, yesterday I did a job. Not really a job, it was just my teacher in the Masters course asking if there's any student willing to help him with his work. Seeing that I'm the only one with enough proficiency of the program (AfterEffects), I volunteered. It wasn't drawing, it wasn't animating. I got a graphic provided and all I did was doing a very simple masking task and all I needed was time and patience.

Being a self-slaver I am, I got it done in a day. Teacher was satisfied, then asked for my rate. I wasn't sure how much should I ask. I was about to offer 50$ or something but I hesitated because I don't know what's the acceptable fee for that kind of job.

Then I got asked the same question again. "How many hours did it took you?" I briefly calculated and then answered "7 hours". And my teacher immediately offered 140$.

And it clicked. I was getting paid per hour.

My task was valued at 20$ per hour. That's where the number came from. If only I knew I would get paid per hour, I would take my time a bit more =P (though I probably can't, knowing the other assignments are piling up).

Now how about commissions?

My most expensive piece was valued at 50$.

Which, according to this new logic, should've taken me only 2 and a half hours.

But it didn't.

It took me a month.

Well, not a whole month, since I didn't work on it all the time. But it definitely was more than 2.5 hours.

I think I got the difference between this job, and commissions. This is a lousy metaphor, but it's like growing beans.

You can grow beans out of fun, and once you get the beans, you can sell it for a fixed price. But that's just how far it goes. No matter how much time, effort and love you put into the bean, you'd still be selling it at that price. You can be extra good and make high-quality beans which would sell for more, but once you run out of it, you would need to grow another.

In the other hand, you can work by taking care of someone else's bean farm. You get paid for how long you're working there. No matter whether it makes good bean or not, or no beans at all, you'd still get paid.

I'm not complaining about commissions here, I'm not saying that it's a bad scam or something. Because truth is, it might still be the only way some of us can make money from doing what they love. The thing is, with this field of "drawing anime", the clients are mostly individuals who just want to see things drawn in your style for the fun of it. They are just like us, normal individuals with limited budget who are not ready to dish out hundreds of dollars for something as trivial as a drawing. They're not generating money from it, and if they do, it probably won't be much.

In the other hand, when you're being commissioned by companies, with bigger amount of money, who will generate money from the work, you would be paid drastically higher. I heard logo commissions are worth 4 digits. And again though, it has nothing to do with your skill, effort, or love. It's more about how big the company you work for is, and whether you're lucky enough to work for one. And unfortunately, I can't think of any reason why big companies would want "animu drawings".

Still, at least when you grow your own beans, you do it "for fun" and you would be able to proudly present it as "your own beans".

---------------------

So that's just my random thought of the day, remind you that I'm still a beginner in this world, and my view will probably seem immature or noobish for some of you who has already been in the industry.

Also grammar mistakes will exist, please deal with it, it's really hard to let the fountain of thought to flow out while making sure it's grammatically perfect at the same time.

Heya. I guess you're wondering where I've been after the graduation film.

Well, I've been trying to take on music, playing actual musical instruments. I have been progressing slowly though. Probably because I'm learning 6 at once.

Also I drew this picture of 56 of my classmates, since I'm graduating and all.

I'm not uploading it here because I know some people are concerned about putting their face on public websites that are not facebook.

Lastly! There's this grand, global animation collab project where a bunch of artists animate an entire episode of Sailor Moon, shot by shot! While I don't watch sailor moon much, it's still a fun thing to do.

Check out their tumblr here and see if you can spot mine!

moonanimate.tumblr.com/

If you're an animation person and are confident about your ability or style give this a try! Or even if you're not an animation person, because majority of the shot are static image with moving mouth.

That's it for now. Oh and I've been playing Harvest Moon A New Beginning. It's super addictive.

I need 3 male voices, one to sound obnoxious, one to sound feminine and one to sound posh. Comment or note if you want more details.

Manifest!!

It's over D:

But it was amazing! So I end up getting a table since my friend got it right at the last minute. Boy, I have almost gave up hope before, I though I'd just not have a table but then he got it so I went frenzy and drew and printed stuffs right the day before Manifest.

So hi, welcome if you found me through one of your pile of collected businescard! You might remember me from the stack of bussinescard on my table.

Hope you like my page! It's kinda abandoned but it still got stuffs to look at. Feel free to drop a hi so I can know you!

And check out my two best-selling pieces!

It's the top two, naturally. Everyone loves Eren being intense and the Grumpkins. No one knows about Bravest Warriors/Regular Show, unfortunately. It's a bit disappointing.

And yes, those two aren't in my gallery yet. I just did them the day before manifest. I'll go upload them when I feel like it =P

And mmmm....cosplay cosplay. Here're my cosplay this year.

Second day I went Kaneda again. Lots of compliments! Nothing beats the classic anime characters. Especially one in full leather suit. Also check out the capsule on my back, I finally did it. With just sticker paper stuck in. Peels off very easily.

paul375 is doing a greeeat job as Sky Jack. Also check out that awesome Laxus.
Manifest2013_01 by RadenWA
Third day, I did Rudy Roughnight. This time, no one noticed me (just one actually), because Wild ARMs.

So yeah, I had big time fun.

Now, I still got a bunch of awesome cosplay photos I can upload, and also a huge pile of awesome artist's websites I should visit. But I probably can't do that anytime soon because I gotta get back to my graduation film. And graduation film means no life.

So yeah, that's probably the last you'd hear from me until like November, so yeah <3

Manifest is coming and I haven't got a table.

I would like to get a table.

I might get one of my own for 230 bucks, but I doubt that my stuffs' sale would cover that up, so it wouldn't be preferred. Plus, having a table alone is kinda sad and boring.

Soooo, if any of you is opening a table and still got a spot left in your table, it would be very cool and kind of you if you can let me in. I will pay my share of the table cost so you can pay less.

Or, if anyone'd like to buy a table together, that's also possible, but make sure it's before July 20 because by then the prices' gonna be up.

Well, I know I only have a handful of watchers who live in Melbourne, but just probably this would work out.

Lock's Quest

Sat Jun 8, 2013, 8:58 AM
Have anybody played this DS game?
Probably not. Because the game won the award for "Best Game no one played" for a reason.
First of all, let's here's the box art, and, surprise surprise, the artist IS in DA!
Lock's Quest Boxart by ushio18
First thing anyone notice would be the character, Lock, who is kind of a mixture between Jak from Jak and Daxter, Cloud Strife, and Matthew from Golden Sun DD. I have the feeling that it might have drove some people away, definitely not me though because I'd happily play any character with steampunk-ish gears with goggles gloves and boots and all.

Lock might be bit and pieces combined from various character, but the game itself is one solid tower of win. Which is relevant because it's a tower defense game. So imagine World of Warcraft, done in a DS isometric cute sprite style from the guys who made Drawn to Life.

You play Lock, who is an Archineer, which quite obviously a mix of Architect and Engineer. You play the battles by first building walls and cannons and traps and everything (within a limited amount of time!), then the battle start, troops and troops of enemies come flooding in and Lock can either go down himself to kick some enemy asses, or keeping the fortress standing by repairing it.

It fits people who like to pre-plan and strategize, just like me. You need to scour the area and check where the enemies are coming from to design and build the most effective fortress and place the turrets at the right place to deal the most damage to the enemies.

The music is quite nice, it's just like Pokemon Ranger- they definitely have nice composition and orchestration, but because of DS' limited capabilities they end up sounding mediocre. The solution would be to have people to do remastered version of their musics, but unfortunately, just like Pokemon Ranger, it's not popular enough for people to remix their music.

The only thing I find weird is how much the sprite doesn't match the character art. Sure, the sprite still have the yellow spiky hair and goggles, but c'mon, the sprite have a striking yellow scarf while he's clearly seen wearing a RED scarf in the dialogues. And the sprite's pants is white while as you can see from the box art, his pant is NOT white.

So why did I randomly described this game here? So you can know about it and go try it out yourself. The game is so well designed, all the aspects work out nicely and it keeps me excited. It's so fresh and new for DS, they use touchscreen so effectively and the real-time battling system reminds me so much of my old MMORPG days. The game is just so good that if I can find it in the shops, I would buy it, OR better yet, if the developing company is asking for donations, I WOULD donate. It's just THAT good, it should get a sequel and heck, an animated serie perhaps.

If they made a sequel for PC that would be great, since the drag-and click system would work so well with a mouse, and if they invent a way to rotate the camera around that would be great too, since there're lots of times when I can't see what I've placed behind trees and such.

So, the point is, this game is great. Try it.

---------00000------------

And, yes, I'm still busy with school work and all, winter break is coming next week but I have to start working on my graduation film over the break if I want to get all of the film done. And you skeptical people who would scourn me for making a game review while still being busy, screw you, give me a break. I cannot live on working alone, I need to take breaks and playing games is the best way for that.

Over and out.

Hay Low Peepul

Wed May 22, 2013, 8:29 AM
Hey.
I just wanna say sorry that I have been so shit and forgetting how to exist.

College is just taking its toll as usual, with this whole year reserved to make my single graduation film.

HOWEVER! I might just have a bunch of baby ducks stuffs that I can kinda upload as a filler in the meantime, mostly experimentation, college stuffs I forgot to upload before and some other stuffs I do to fill the very little spare time I have. So I won't guarantee quality.

I won't be able to create full blown huge poster quality stuff for a while, in fact I haven't done illustrations for such a long time I worry that I might forget how to make one. Oh well. That's the risk of going to an animation course instead of an illustration course. Not that any of them guarantee a better future than the other....

Winter break are coming shortly though, and with Manifest coming shortly afterwards as well, I guess I will be able to make one or two big pieces for sale. I won't guarantee it tho-since I would most likely spend winter break working in my graduation film as well. Can't have too much time for an animation, da.

So...yeah, filler uploads might be coming soon....bear with me.

I'm leaving DA.

Mon Apr 1, 2013, 4:26 AM
Yeah. Because of college and life and stuff. I haven't been updating for ages anyways.

Okay, that April Fool's joke was probably too obvious.
=P

Still, it is true that I'm as busy as ever despite the fact that it's Easter Break, but I'm just checking out DA to see what they did for April Fools. Well, they sure made it pretty easy to spot. I would've preferred something more "in-your-face" like the avatar change thing or the cat domination one. This year's rather subtle. Still, it's kinda a good idea.

Too good of an idea even, perhaps. If they would work on it a bit more, then it would be a very functional and effective thing. Kinda like the refined version of "random deviant".

Anyways, that's all you'll hear from me today. I'll go back to my cave to slave my ass off.

Birthday stuffs

Mon Mar 18, 2013, 7:16 PM
So, since last Saturday was my birthday and stuffs I just figured I should write a journal about that. Well a bunch of IRL friends tried to make me stay awake until Friday midnight so they can throw a surprise party at me, but midnight negativity overtaken me and I couldn't stand staying outside in cold Autumn weather so I left and disappoint them and feel really bad.

I got an Aquamarine from my friend and a surprise very yummy chocolate cake from my big brother as well, and aside from replying the hundreds of lovely birthday messages in DA and FB, I spent my birthday doing nothing but homework. Pretty anticlimatic, but that's just my life.

BUT THAT ASIDE. CHECK OUT THIS PICTURE DONE BY :iconkuroshinki: FOR MY BIRTHDAY. It's the best digital gift ! ever received.

It's my character Jon, he based it off my 3D model of him. Actually, have I uploaded the pic here? I should start uploading my college works here I guess so you won't think I just disappeared.

Go and shower him with love and slime and faves and watches.

I'm out. See yahz.
