Aimee Weber

Very rarely do I make art for other people, even for commission. At conventions I sell books, not sketches, and it takes someone special to get me to do a full blown portrait. But Aimee Weber is a special woman. I met her while playing Second Life. There was a grid failure while I was purchasing a garter belt from her store, and I ended up contacting her to resolve an inventory problem. She noticed that I make comics. I sent her to my site. She commissioned me to make her portrait.

In Second Life, Aimee is a fashion designer and architect among many, many other things. She is creative powerhouse and a digital star in her own right. She is a science enthusiast (a girl after my own heart). So yes, an awesome person who I could really get into drawing. I had a lot of fun with this project, and I felt that it has helped solidify my signature style.

Notice the safety pins in the sparkles. I didn't want her to look like a Nene Thomas fairy. Not that I don't like Nene Thomas. (I fell in love with her work back when I first saw the Sivitri Scarzam card she drew for Magic: the Gathering.) I just didn't want this to come off as a fairy but rather as Aimee Weber in her trademark wings. I added the sparkles for the butterfly's sake, not hers, and the whole swash is removable in the master copy. The stockings were my pièce de résistance. There's always one part of a picture that I feel comes out above and beyond my expectations, and for this one, it had to be the stockings.
