I throw in the background first thing to take up all of that annoying white space, and it helps keep the color scheme coordinated.  :-)

Oh I know what you mean. I usually start with my main subject and then end up with this annoying whiteness for a background and I have to force it out to finish or just never do.Sweating a little...  Backgrounds can be such a pain to do. Perhaps I should start with my backgrounds as well, it will motivate me to finish and get on with coloring my main subject. Meow :3
