First, I just wanted to make normal comic panels in FireAlpaca. So I found this awesome video, which answered many of my questions (go subscribe to her channel!):

But after watching, I still had a question: how do I make a CIRCULAR panel? So I messed around with FireAlpaca's selection tools and figured out how. Then I decided to document everything before I forgot it all. Here are my notes. I hope this helps someone!

How to make comic panels in FireAlpaca (pretty much ripped off from the video):

   1. Make a new blank image. You can use the 'comic' preset or not.
   2. Layer -> Add Panel Material
   3. Using the Divide tool (it looks like an Xacto knife), divide the panel material into the number and shape of panels you want.
   4. To make a diagonal cut, hold the 'shift' key while dividing the panel.
   5. To move the panels around or resize them, choose Tool -> Object, and click inside the panel you want to change. You can now drag the panel around, warp them, or re-scale them (as long as they're squares or rectangles) by dragging the edges.

I couldn't figure out how to easily re-scale a non-rectangular panel with the Object tool. It kept moving the edges in ways I didn't want. If someone figures this out, please let me know! But fortunately, this is pretty simple if you rasterize the panel layer first. See below.

How to Re-Scale a Non-Rectangular Panel:

   1. Layer -> Rasterize Material. This transforms ALL the panels from vector objects into raster objects, so you may want to first duplicate the panel layer, to ensure you have a backup.
   2. Select the panel you want to re-scale by using the Lasso tool.
   3. Select -> Transform (or ctrl + T). For more advanced/nonlinear warping, use Select -> Mesh Transform.

But Raaky, what about the circles???

How to Create a Circular Comic Panel in FireAlpaca:

   1. Choose the Select tool.
      a. From the menu, switch from Rectangle to Ellipse.
      b. Check the box that says 'Constrain Proportions'. This forces the ellipse to be a circle. 'Round corners' shouldn't matter because this is a circle, it has no corners. Also make sure 'AntiAliasing' is checked, this will keep the edges smooth.
   2. Select the area where you want the circular panel to be.
   3. Using the paint bucket, fill this entire selection with the color you want your panel border to be.
   4. Go to the menu bar and choose Select -> Contract
      a. In the 'pixel' input box, enter however many pixels wide you want your border to be
      b. Choose 'ok'
   5. You should now have a smaller area selected, inside the filled-in area. Delete this area.
   6. Congratulations! You're now left with a circular comic panel. On a new layer, draw whatever scene you want in the empty space inside this panel. This same technique will work with selections of any size or shape, so go ahead and make whatever crazy panels you want.
Raaky Nouveau
Tried a new art technique and it worked out pretty well. Started in Paintstorm, finished in FireAlpaca.

Paintstorm is for some reason not respecting my license key anymore, so I'll be using FireAlpaca from here on. Fortunately, FireAlpaca has everything I need and is really good, especially for free software.

I'm trying for a bit of an 'art nouveau' feel in my style, we'll see how that works in the future!

Different Folks - Raaky's World 8
Rats are nocturnal. This means they prefer to sleep through the morning, and they never leave for work until at least midafternoon.

Not an Early Griffon - Raaky's World 7
Still working out the kinks in my art process. I was pretty good about sticking with my shading and coloring strategy this time, but I still need to get more consistent character models down. I also need to learn to color in a way that still looks good after being downscaled a bit.

Good Morning Pierre
New characters - Julius the rat, and Pierre the griffon. Julius and Pierre live in the same town as Raaky, so they'll both be making appearances later on.

Here's the gist of the comic, for anyone who's confused. Pierre wakes up early to the sound of his alarm, sleepwalks down the hall with the alarm clock in his right hand, and stuffs his alarm clock in the fridge. Only in the *last* panel is he awake enough to ask what time it is - but it's still doubful whether he's lucid enough to realize what he did with his clock.

This is also an example of why good art matters: if you don't get that that's a refrigerator in the third panel (or notice the clock in his hand), you won't understand this comic at all. You'll probably understand that Pierre is tired and irritated, but you won't understand that he's SO tired and irritated, his first instinct on waking up is to hide his alarm clock inside an airtight box.

I showed the black and white version of this to a few friends, and they all though it was funny - but only *after* I explained panel 3. I hope this colored version communicates everything more clearly. Anyway, I think this is a good candidate for redrawing once I've fleshed out my art process a bit more.

Thanks! I like to chat, but I don't like to go afk in the middle of a conversation, so I usually come on to servers when I have an hour or more to spend.
