Den of Angels

FIRST: The ULTIMATE place to look for information on BJDs: Den of Angels. If you have more questions about BJDs in general and not mine specifically, you're better off asking and researching here.

The MOST Frequently Asked Questions

• What are these things called?
Ball-Jointed Dolls (BJD) or Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls (ABJD).

• Where did you get your dolls?
Dollzone - Ysrael (US Vendor: Junkyspot), Vao (Canadian Vendor: Featherfall)
Luts - Remi, Rainer, Roman
Fairyland - Mathey
Alchemic Labo - Denas
Soom - Amyntoros, Alexander, Adonais, TeenyVao, TeenyYael, TeenyJin
Crobidoll - Jin
Iplehouse - Griffin
Dream of Doll - Osiris
Dollgru - Ark
Volks - Falen, TeenyRemi
Supia - Linh

• How did you make these dolls?
I didn't. I bought them. Some of my dolls are painted by me, but they are not cast by me.

• How much are they?
They can range from $200USD to $2000USD and upwards. No, I don't know where you can get them cheaper. If you're concerned about them being expensive, already this is not a hobby for you.

• They're expensive. Why spend so much on a doll?
Because I want to and because I can. They're fulfilling in every artistic endeavor I enjoy -- photography, photo editing, painting, writing, all that good stuff.

• Are you selling them/Can I have them?
Emphatically no, unless I post a "For Sale".

• What do the acronyms stand for?
DZ = Dollzone (Doll company)
FL = Fairyland (Doll company)
CP = Cerberus Project (Doll company)
IH = Iplehouse (Doll company)
DoD = Dream of Doll (Doll company)
SD = Super Dollfie = 60cm (Doll size)
MSD = Mini Super Dollfie = 40-43cm (Doll size)
SSDF = Super Senior Delf (Doll type)
MNF = Minifée (Doll type)
DoT = Dream of Teen (Doll type)
NS = Normal Skin (Skin type)
WS = White Skin (Skin type)
RS = Real Skin (Skin type)
MSC = Mr. Super Clear (Doll painting material)

You can find a much more extensive list here on DoA: www.denofangels.com/forums/sho…

• Do you do face-up commissions?
Not explicitly. I don't have enough skill or confidence to paint other people's dolls. If you really, really want me to and you understand I'm neither professional nor experienced and what I do isn't flawless, then just ask me. I currently paint heads for free, all I ask is that you pay shipping both ways.

I am currently NOT taking any face-up commissions. If you have already spoken to me about it prior to me changing my commission status, you're still good, just note me again. But I am not taking any new commissions at the moment.

Examples of my faceups: Remi, Falen, Vao, Griffin, Mathey, Ark, Linh, Rainer, Alexander, Amyntoros
I did not paint Ysrael, Denas, Osiris, Roman, or Jin.

• Where did you get Ysrael's jointed hands?
Yael's jointed hands are from Dollzone.

• Did Vao come with elf ears? All the Floys on the Dollzone site have elf ears.
Yes. Vao originally came with elf ears, but I sanded them off when I got him.

• Where can I read your story?
Uh... in the artist comments of my deviations. 8); There is no written story yet. Just bits and pieces. I'm fickle and haven't set a solid plot/timeline for my stuff, so I just have chunks of plot here and there. I'll write some stuff eventually, I'm sure, but for now, there is no written story.

Short answer: No. You may not edit, repost, or redistribute my photos without my explicit written permission. My photos are not stock, nor are they free domain. Permission must be granted or action will be taken against you. YOU MAY NOT USE MY PHOTOS TO REPRESENT YOUR RP CHARACTERS.

• Can I draw (insert character's name here)?
Sure. Fanart's cool with me. Give me a link and I'll feature it in my journal.

• Can I use one of your photos as a pose reference?
I've got no problems with my photos being used as pose references. Please do give credit though, I would appreciate it. I believe strongly in drawing from life to learn, so in the case of my own photos, you're welcome to use them for references. YOU MAY NOT USE THEM AS VISUAL REFERENCE FOR YOUR OWN CHARACTER. Cannot stress that enough. My characters are mine, not yours.

• Can I write fanfiction about your characters?
I rather you didn't.

• OMG YOUR DOLL LOOKS JUST LIKE MY CHARACTER--
No, they look like my characters, thanks. On that note, don't use my photos to represent your characters. My dolls are created to represent my own creative endeavors, so how about you use some of your own creativity to come up with your own?

Q&A

What's "R727" mean?
R = Room. 727 stands for Ysrael, who was my first doll.

What's the deal with the numbers?
The numbers correspond with the character's initials. Yael's initials are YKY. Y=25 (2+5=7). K=11 (1+1=2). So YKY = 727. Mathey is MKD. M=13. K=11. D=4. MKD=424.

Name Pronunciation Guide!
Ysrael - Like the country. Israel.
Yael - Yale, like the school.
Mathey - Mathie. Or Math-ee.
Vao - Vow, rhymes with "now".
Falen - Allen/Alan with an F in front of it.
Remi - Reh-mi.
Denas - Like Dennis.
Jin - Gin, like the alcohol. Short "i" sound.
Rainer - Ry-ner. Not Rain-er.
Amyntoros - Ah-mihn-tohr-ohs.
Adonais - Ah-doh-nay-us

Hello oAo/

Since my boyfriend :iconbelialschoice: did make a cosplay of Ysrael I thought it would be allright to cosplay one of your dolls ( with refrence and credit to you of course!) but I wanted to ask to be on the safe side:

Would it be cool with you If I would make a cosplay of Kamran?
Also: could you make a photo of his clothes? then I would sew them for the cosplay.

greets from germany!

Hello! Yes of course, I'd love it if you cosplayed Kamran! :iconloveloveplz: I'd be really honored!

I don't know that I'll have time to take proper photos of his clothes, but here are the product photos of the outfit. I think this might be more helpful for sewing reference than photos I could take anyway: www.dollmore.net/shop/step1.ph…

Thank you for asking me! I'm really excited to see your cosplay. :love: Please say hello to dear Shion for me!

First off, I want to say I LOVE your dolls! They're all so beautiful and you photograph them so well. :D
Secondly, I just wanted to ask you a question. What size wigs do Luts SSDF wear? Ive been saving up for one but on the Luts website they sell wigs 8"-9" and 9"-10" wigs for them. Which one fits them better in your opinion?

:iconr727:
R727 Featured By Owner Jan 9, 2014
Thank you! 8)

I've never owned any SSDF wigs from Luts, so I couldn't tell you from experience what wig size of theirs fits them best. The wigs I have for my SSDFs are 24cm, which is about 9.5". They're a tiny bit loose, but they fit well with a wig cap to keep the wigs from slipping. So I believe either an 8-9" or 9-10" wig will work fine -- the 8-9" will probably fit much tighter, whereas a 9-10" will be a little loose and may need a wig cap to keep it in place.

If I had experience with their wigs I'd be able to give you a better opinion. Sorry that's not more helpful! ^^;

I have an unusual question! My doll's one leg always seems to want to bend at the knee. Is it possible his strings are twisted or is there another reason you maybe know of?
It never used to want to bend, until I posed him with his double jointed knee and now it keeps bending. Its not a bad thing; just annoying because posing him is now a challenge (:

Hm, it's hard for me to say without seeing exactly what the doll is doing! It could be that his strings are twisted like you said, making his stringing is too tight on that one side, or it could be just that his knee's joint piece isn't going back into place the way it was originally. Either way, you might be able to see if either of these things are the problem by pulling his leg pieces apart a bit (you don't need to unstring him, just pull the pieces apart and stretch the strings a bit), just enough to separate the leg parts and knee joint. Then you can see if the string is twisted or if the knee joint isn't locking like it should.

I don't know if that'll help, but I can't say for sure what else it could be unless I saw it myself. 8)

Thanks for replying!
I did indeed pull the leg at the knee joint and it looks like the string is straight, so I'm guessing it must be the joint itself.
It was absolutely fine and stiff until I bent the knee at the double joint, and now it won't lock like it used to.
I suppose I'll just have to live with it, because there's not much I can do about fixing it ;_;

I know it says you're currently not taking face-up commissions, but do you know of anyone with a similar offer (heads for free, or at least not extremely expensive)? I'm trying to find the cheapest way to start working with BJDs, but there's a lot I'm still trying to figure out before I can actually get one.

I don't know anyone personally who is doing free faceups right now, but there are usually listings on Den of Angels for people who do free/inexpensive faceups. 8) I've looked through the threads there, here are a couple people that are doing them for free (excluding shipping): [link] [link] Sorry I'm not more helpful, but I might reopen for commissions in the near future!

I have something to say here because you mentioned that you didn't know where to get BJDs for less than $200.

The Monster High line is ball jointed, much less expensive (about $10 - $30 a doll), and can be customized similarly, though I doubt they're as high quality as the types of BJDs you have. They even have "build-a-monster" kits with different heads, hands, etc. for full customization.

Bratzillas were released soon after the Monster High dolls. They have ball-jointed bodies AND glass eyes. They are also at a lower price ($30 -$40 a doll) than a regular BJD.

The doll company Lovely Patsy also came out with Midnight Magic, a cheap line of Ball Jointed Dolls (just $5 a doll!) that are, surprisingly, pretty close in quality to the Monster High dolls. (Actually, it's not so surprising since Lovely Patsy's dolls are often decent quality)

So, just thought I should mention this in case you weren't already aware of these inexpensive substitutes.

I knew about Monster High dolls, but I've never updated my FAQ to reflect those since no one's ever asked about them and I don't own any so they don't show up in my gallery. ^^; I guess I should clarify in my FAQ that I don't where to obtain Asian BJDs for cheaper, since the question I get most often is where to get dolls like the ones in my gallery. But thank you for the information! 8D

I'm honestly not sure, I've never used real makeup on my dolls. In any case, any material you use on dolls could smudge if you don't spray them with sealant when you're done painting them.

Some people have asked me before, but in other places like Formspring and Tumblr. 8) But I choose my names mostly on what I think sounds cool. I don't look at name meanings at all, really, not until after I'm solid on what I want to call a character.

Ysrael's name is derived from the name of a cousin of mine. Vao and Mathey are named after guys I used to work with in high school. Remi is named after Gambit from the X-Men. Falen is named after Fallon, a bassist I like. Griffin and Roman are just names I always thought sounded cool. 8) Rainer is a name I liked from a German class I took in middle school. Jin's name is influenced by troll names from the Warcraft games. Linh is named after a (guy!) friend of mine. Alexander and Amyntoros are named after historical figures and Adonaïs is named after an elegy by Percy Bysshe Shelley.

I'm not sure when this was last updated, but I felt I should ask about this: Do you still offer faceups for others, as long as they pay shipping, or have you stopped that/opened a real commissions shop?
I've been in love with your style for a while, and although I am trying my own hand at commissions I do have a head or two I feel would be great in your style.
