What can I improve?

Tue Jun 6, 2017, 2:10 PM
Ahhhh sometimes I have a hard time taking criticism but it's really important!!!

I want to improve over the summer and really learn some new things, and I feel like I cooouulld do it on my own but!!! If anyone of you have any ideas what I can improve with my art, please comment and let me know! It can be general things or small things, and I promise I won't get angry at anybody<3 I'd really appreciate if anyone of you guys wanted to share!!

Here's some of my most recent art!

For sent by R0BUTTAll Men Are Pigs by R0BUTT

Inspiration by R0BUTTLineart talk by R0BUTT

Greens by R0BUTTBumblebee by R0BUTT

I am aware of that most of my art is partially/mostly sketchy, i don't know if that's something I should work on or not but !!!!!! Let me know what you think, I welcome your advice with an open mind<333

Thank you so much!!!

ALSO, I've done it before upon request from a few people to critique their art and help them out, and I'm willing to try to help people out as well! You can add me on discord, R0butt #4884, or note me (though it might take me longer to answer) if you'd like to get advice and ""guidance"" whatever!! I kinda enjoy it!

THANKS AGAIN !!!!!

Maybe more shading and lightening? Your art is already perfect though.

tbh Otto, I see nothing to improve with your people. they are all so A+ good.

though I think you should practice landscape, and scenes! I would love to see more scenic art form you!
like, earthy stuff, city scapes, buildings, indoors etc!!

!!  like next time you see a view or a place you like, remember it
and then draw it later!  Even add your own twists to the scene too!

But good luck on drawing some scenes!  I'd love to see them when you draw some!
I also really want to get drawing scenes because I want to take an oc(s) story of mine
and write it out as a graphic novel with a lot of detail and action, but it will have to
include old buildings and a lot of scenic nature stuff.

i got faith in you, bro

whew im not much of an artist compared to you but i mean !! i guess i have som stuff to say

1. ) (this is mostly style wise / my personal opinion OTL )  ive noticed a lot that if you draw lineart, you draw with very very thick/dark lines and they almost seem out of place sometimes ( the jaw/hands here >  Inspiration by R0BUTT  and the jaw/neck area here >  Beca babe by R0BUTT are two examples) and i think thinner/more detailed lines would really do your art some good, its already so pretty but it could be a good way to improve everyday style : 3

2. ) i third the body types thing. when you run out of ways to improve, i think the best way is to get used to drawing MORE, whether it be different species or different types of people
i think itd be smart to practice drawing different male+female bodies and try to master all kinds so you have complete freedom when it comes to that
( as well as face shapes - ive also noticed that a lot of your male face shapes look inherently the same, you should play around with weight/eye placement/jawbone placement/etc to make your faces stand out more as unique! )

3. ) lighting !! a lot of your more majestic drawings could def. thrive with some sort of light source that makes everything sort of glow
an example would be >  Greens by R0BUTT , which is one of my favs of yours, but could have def. used some light source and highlighting to make the girl stand out stronger
i feel like a lot of people forget, shading is for shadows, but there is also highlights, which are parts that are directly facing the light source to give it a better glow (dont be afraid to make the highlighting stand  out,, making highlights on a sep. layer above the color and then adding an effect on it/lowering opacity can really help with making it look like light, that way it adds in all of the colors beneath it and not just some)
,
4. ) i think this was already pointed out but maybe try adding small shines to your work? a common style is to add a very thin (hard brush) line of white/another very light color along the side of the face where the light is facing, (or along the edges of hair to add extra shine)
that way you can make people's skin look less matte and more glossy looking .3.

and lastly !!!
5. ) animals! i see youve drawn some dogs (  We survive { + lil life update } by R0BUTT For Ettio!! by R0BUTT  ) but i can tell that your maybe not very comfortable with the anatomy of dogs; so you should practice dogs and the anatomy of other animals, so that way you can draw them with ease, in unique positions and more often
. 3 .

thats about all !!! you probably already know of half this stuff since its all kind of style related but i thought id slap it down here just in case ;; feel free to ignore any of this

( edit: also, clothes ! i personally hATE drawing clothes because of how difficult it is, but if your looking to improve then figuring out how the fabrics work and where it should be loose/wrinkly and stuff would be good to do )

//rubs hands

1. Both of those examples are sketches first of all hgfjghk so theyre not done or anything, so idk if it's comparable (i looked at my other more finished artwork 2 compare) but my thick lines are very close 2 heart to me and most likely something i will not try to erase from my style, since I'm comfortable with it and see no benefit for me or my style to change that! Thanks for ur input tho!

2. I saw lotta comments abt body types and it saddens me cause when I look at my gallery I realise most of the bodies I draw are fairly similar! It makes me feel dumb cause I do quite often draw different body types but I rarely finish those artworks (in like 100 sketches, i finish 7 n upload them) so I'll def try to change that and finish those kinds of artworks!
As for face shapes: I have practiced for many good months to break my same face pattern, and I have come very far with it, I talk about it in THIS journal. It's still a work in progress, but in my opinion I have come far with the variety compared to the one I used to have. Of course there is room for improvement tho.

3. I agree!! Lightning is very important, and can really bring a piece out. I have sketches already planned for making art with light in focus, so that's noted as well! In that particular piece I didn't want to shade by choice - which i think is worth mentioning, cause in that particular piece there's a lot of patterns and shapes and such which I wanted to bring out more, and shading would distract the viewer from what I'd like them to see! But making interesting pieces with light and shadow as focus will def come, I'm lowkey mentally preparing myself. As for highlights, I do add small distinct highlights on almost every face I make, but I really don't want to overdo it since my art really isnt shiny at all, my art IS matte, and I kind of enjoy it that way! I'm also aware of how you get those effects so dw omfg

4. The thing with adding a hard shard of light is something i definitely have considered! Just waiting for a piece which can fit such a thing omfg, but thank u for this one! I'll keep it in mind!

5. Ur right, I'm not v good at it yet but honestly kljhkgjkj it's more of a hobby n when i dont wanna draw faces lol, but if i ever wanna draw dogs etc more seriously i'll ofc have to practice more!

6. Clothes and stuff are thb really interesting to me (as well as a pain) bbut every time I draw a piece where the character has clothing is a learning experience and I gotta look up refs almost every time omg, so that's a learning process that's going forward as well~ (i prefer drawing ppl nude doe, much more fun lol)

Thanks a lot for ur input!!

ahh nothing i said was intended to make u feel dumb or taken as " i dont like ur style " because your art is honestly so pretty and??im was just pointing out a lot of stuf that ur alredy on top of s
i did not see the journal abt the faces aghf !!! tbh ur a lot better at varying faces then before,, now that i look through your oldish art compared to the more recent stuff

ill look forwrd to those planned light pieces : 0 experimenting is light is alwys cool looking so im interested to see ur take on it

also i can 101% relate to the clothes thing,i hate drawing clothes sm and i sort of like adding in the little details when smone is clothless (like belly buttons n muscles n stof !) bc its just so muche asier

oh,lastly, since i just thought of something: perspective? i want to mess around a bit with dramatic perspective myself but its ss hard

umm... particle effects? your art is super pleasing to look at already so i dont have much to say. just make an add layer and spray the finished drawing with particles to make it super cool and glowy... think like, fireflies. everywhere

i also suggest adding highlights to skin to make it appear shinier uwu

ghhh I'm not sure if it'd fit with my art since it's so matte and not-shiny... I guess if i make a piece that allows it i could try? im suspicious HAV - John Watson
I do make small highlights on the skin but i dont wanna overdo it hjkgjhkj i dun want them to look oily n shit, but I guess i gotta make more of it then????? like idk if ur thinking w a hard brush or more of an airbrush kinda thing? ;0c

its okay man, its not exactly an effort that requires you to create an entirely new piece o3o you can just take one that you're almost finished with, or even one that's already done, and then make a new layer and add particles. works best with pieces that have darker colors, esp in the background ;o

hmmmgh dont worry about skin looking oily, that's just the way skin looks and i think it provides more contrast to your piece ;3 i think a combination of both hard and soft brushes would be good? or maybe harder brushes where the lighting hits the skin sharply, and softer brushes where it's not nearly as direct. something like that :3c

love me by Tokyo-DAZE   welcome home. by Tokyo-DAZE   Secret Clearing PIXEL YCH by Tokyo-DAZE
my art is nowhere close to yours in terms of skill ///orz/// but i hope u can tell what im talking about? just all those glowing particles everywhere to provide interest to the piece and make the atmosphere a little mystical ;o
and yes, sure thing ^3^ it's always good to experiment!

seconding the body types suggestion. experimenting with different shapes and sizes for people will open up how you approach designing and interpreting characters.

It saddens me to have this pointed out cause I c it's true when i look at my gallery that the body types are fairly similar to one another, n it makes me sadder cause I actually draw a lot of diff bodies but I rarely finish those drawings (outta 100 sketches i finish n upload like 7) so I'll def keep this in mind and finish more art that has more diversity, as well as showing more diversity between the characters I have!

mmm maybe try different atmospeheres jsut to see what you can do? Your stuff's really soft and fluffy, I'd lve to see how you can use that in a darkner image, whether in color or general atmosphere

honestly your anatomy is super nice already?? and I'm in love with your style!! My only suggestion would be to try drawing different body types
chubby boys, thicc girls, big hips small tits or vice versa
all sorts of body types!!

Thank you! I feel like my anatomy can still improve some but thank u so much!<3 The body type thing - yes. I really do. I looked into my gallery and lots of the bodytypes are similar to each other n that's just sad, especially since i sketch a lot of diff bodies but i dont finish them?? Which sucks!!! i rly should! So I'll def take this into account and find more diversity throughout my art and characters, thank u so much!
