Lately I’ve been looking for resources to help people understand one another better. Particularly for those of us on the ASD spectrum. I’ve been an autism advocate since I was diagnosed—I wanted to help people understand and connect, build bridges, and be aware of what many on the spectrum deal with everyday. I believe understanding something may not be what it looks like and understanding there’s more going on can help us all lead to fewer miscommunications, and not accuse each other too soon, so we don’t hurt each other.
Today I want to consider Alexithymia.
This is when people have trouble describing what they’re feeling and experiencing. Many of my friends and people I’ve known experience Alexithymia. I’m always patient and careful with them because I know it takes them time to describe what they need and what they want, or why they have trouble telling me something—sometimes it takes them a few days before they can articulate it.
