Zoe lay sprawled across the living room sofa, staring at the popcorn ceiling. The house trapped a frigid, air-conditioned chill; the aggressive chemical bite of Lemon Pledge warred against Helen’s suffocating jasmine perfume and the stale dust of dead potpourri crisping in porcelain bowls. Boredom gnawed at the back of Zoe's skull.
The heavy brass knocker struck the solid oak of the front door, sending three deep, rhythmic thuds echoing down the linoleum hallway.
"I'll get it!" Helen sang out from the kitchen. The slip-slap of her sensible sandals hurried past the archway. The brass latch clicked, and the heavy door groaned inward, letting in a sudden, blinding shaft of afternoon light and a wave of oppressive coastal heat.
Zoe closed her eyes, expecting a delivery driver or a neighbor complaining about the trash bins. Instead, a deep, resonant baritone rumbled through the foyer. The cadence was low, hesitant, and distinctly male.
Helen let out a
