Scan vs. Photo

Description

Here you can see what my scanner "HP Photosmart 5524" always does to my drawings (see "Scan", bottom left)... It seems to hate skin colours, all shades of blue (and many other colors), contrast and really likes to add weird lines everywhere (especially black parts!). It's like you want to photograph something with photoflash (-> the colors are messed up!). The worst part of this drawing was the sky. The scanner really destroyed it. Even Photoshop CS5 could not rescue it. Every attempt to edit (constrast, brightness, color balance,...) the scan makes some part even worse (see sky and some colors in "Scan edited", top left). Maybe some parts look better on the scan, but it's not that much. Sad dummy

Now let's take a look at the photo (camera: Canon EOS600D + Canon 100mm macro; I used my macro, because the quality of my other lenses is far away from this one): The photo (see "Photo", bottom right) is a little bit too dark, but that's all. The contrast and color of the skin didn't get lost and the sky looks much better than on the scan. After editing (see "Photo edited", top right) the picture in Photoshop the colors look more like the ones on paper (...at least on my display...). In my opinion everything looks a bit more realistic. The sky looks smoother, more stars are visible and the skin color (+ contrast) and gold is more realistic as well. :)

What do you prefer? Scan or photo?
Do you have the same problems with your traditional drawings or did you find a perfect solution?

Here is the drawing (Tom Hiddleston as Loki):

At the moment it's the edited scan, but I think that I'll replace it with the edited photo... (Update: replaced!)

Beautiful! The difference between the light and shade, the definition and the colour all seem to be displayed better in the photo. To my eyes, the scan looks more dull. I'll bet the photo can't even do justice to the work viewed in reality.
