Traditional drawing of a black harlequin opal from Australia (Lightning Ridge).
It was time for a new challenge, so I decided to draw my favorite gemstone: an opal! This gem is especially known for its beautiful colors and opalescence (see real opals beneath the drawing). I really wanted to capture this interesting effect, so I chose a stone with many colors (and because I can't afford an harlequin opal... so I just drew it... ^^; )! I always knew that it's pretty difficult to capture an opal with the camera and now I know that it's even more difficult to draw it, but I'm still happy with my first attempt! Although my camera destroyed the constrast and color of blue parts completely (looks better and not so rough in real life on paper).

I was about to ask if you had any black opals of your own but a another look at the picture answered that question.

Yes, there's one black opal in the picture (+ some boulder and black crystal opals). :)

What a beautiful capture of black opal. You know, I just got myself a small white opal stone and I so want to do a study on that and yeah, they're so expensive. D: Anyway, you have pulled it very well! I don't think I can do it. LOL

Thank you very much! :) I'm also looking for a small white opal! I hope that I can buy a little and not so expensive one at a minerals exchange (in Hamburg) next month.^^

You're welcome! :huggle: Good luck with that! Mine costed 40 euros just for a bit of that "fire" in it. Ouch, but so worth it!

Ohgott, Opale!!
