Born to take a foreign throne, Marcellus is suitably pristine and polished. Privileged from a young age with a retinue of scholars and tutors, Marcellus has never lacked for academic influence. Ravenous for truth and easily annoyed with diversion, her critical analysis is the only weapon she's ever required. Marcellus vivisects the intricacies of her peers with the precision - and delicacy - of a surgeon, but never loses sight of the big picture. Effortlessly witty, she enjoys a gentle laugh at a friend's expense, and cuts to the meat when her pride is slighted. Marcellus has cultivated a charisma that is advantageous to her political pursuits and social spheres, careful to match her intransigence with likeability, be the act coy or captivating. She is capable of great patience when it suits her, and terrible impatience when it does not. She demands only what others are willing to give, and considers it fair to match their efforts with her own; Marcellus is loathe to collect favors. Her mother taught her to think before she acts, and so she thinks quickly. She is loyal to Aodh foremost and people second, but harbors a soft, lenient place for family. The subject of morality is of great important to Marcellus, who accepts the ethics of none but herself, designed by her own analysis of what is righteous and what is evil. She endeavors to control the moral high ground in the grand scale of things, but leaves room for petty indulgences: Marcellus never forgets, and only pretends to forgive.
History://
Centuries ago, Aodh and Talori came together to form a political alliance. Though both nations harbored mutual aversions for the other, it was decided that they would trade one royal betrothal each generation to maintain an amiable relationship. The traded wives and husbands would act as ambassadors for their respective homelands, softening the critical assessments of each other's culture, if only just. Historically patriarchal (and intensely problematic, as any Aodhian would note) the Talori would accept nothing less than a woman who bore a womb. The pressure to provide a suitable bride weighed heavily on the Soleil House - never more so than when King Solaris' younger sister, Lilith, betrayed her nation in a bid to escape her betrothal, igniting ancient tensions in the process. Thus it fell to Solaris, and by extension her children, to offer a replacement.
Marcellus' birth was a sigh of relief: at last, Aodh was able to send word of new bride to Emperor Hawkeye, a man turned impatient and temperamental by Lilith's treachery. Marcellus would be raised well, Solaris promised. She would become a woman of upstanding character, a redeemer for her aunt's self-serving transgressions.
The pressure to overcome her family's mistakes set the tone for Marcellus' childhood. From a young age she knew that even a privileged life could be a wholly unfair one, and that her time in her homeland was limited: by eighteen, she would be shipped to a foreign nation to marry a man she knew only through terse, anemic letters. As a young child she resented her aunt's cowardice, angry that she should have to inherit the consequences of her actions. Her future had been stolen from her on a selfish whim. Her heart seethed.
As she grew into a young woman, molded by a firm but doting mother and a menagerie of tutors and political assets, Marcellus found little to be gained in her anger. Alone it was not productive, and Marcellus, endeavoring to emulate the greatness of her King for whom she held only affection and admiration, channeled her anger into something useful: passion. Marcellus shaped herself into a paragon for her people, embodying the quintessential assets of the Aodhian elite. She would charm them, be beloved by them, and when it was time to make her sacrifice she would give herself unto it. For her people she would move Hireath itself, and the noble connotations she imposed on her actions eased the bitterness of her plight.
Her time was short, and so sensibly Marcellus did not seek strong friendships. She did however nurture a strong, lasting love for most members of her family, showering affection on the likes of her siblings, cousins, and step-brother, the latter whom she favored most of all. Her dedication to her family was a great strength, and in the end it would be her greatest weakness. Eighteen by a mere three days, and slated to sail across the sea in less than a week, Marcellus attended her last New Years Ball and was murdered by the same infiltrating usurpers who slit her brother's throat. Marcellus died shielding a young cousin, her skull shattered by the icy blessing of her patron god.
Three years later, she opened her eyes.
Strange Happenings://
Marcellus is cool to the touch, becoming frigid under emotional duress. She breathes frost even on a warm summer day. Migraines plague her often. She harbors a complex relationship with water.Headshot art by ThatDenver
