I hope you’re feeling fancy, because for this month’s aesthetic feature, we’re focusing on royalcore! Recently, I noticed a friend tagging her fashion pictures #royalcore, a term I hadn’t heard before, so I decided to take a deep dive.

If it wasn’t already obvious, royalcore is all about, well, royalty. Think castles, opulent fabrics, crowns, intricate gold detailing, rich jewel tones, or delicate pastels. There are a few different subcategories of the royalcore aesthetic (such as knightcore, princecore, princesscore, kingcore, and queencore, which you can probably picture), but the fun part is that these aesthetics tend to be pared down to be more practical. You don’t have devotees of the aesthetic walking around in full-on suits of armor, for example!

The royalcore aesthetic got a major boost in popularity thanks to the Netflix adaptation of “Bridgerton,” so with the third season arriving soon, I expect we’ll be seeing another resurgence! Overall, the aesthetic tends to focus on royalty from western Europe, but it spans across centuries (be it Arthurian-era royalty or the Tudor period) and has a very romanticized, fairytale feeling to it.

This aesthetic shows up in fashion, interior design, and, of course, art. Some inspirations for royalcore looks include TV shows like “Bridgerton,” “The White Queen,” and “The Borgias,” designs for Disney princesses like Cinderella, Belle, and Sleeping Beauty, films like “Ever After” and “The Princess Bride,” and more!
