A picture taken at my local zoo of the mountain lion. I kinda feel bad. She seems to act so regal, as if preserving her dignity, but you can see the pain in her eyes anyway.

Thank you! Yeah, I agree. It's awful to see such majestic animals caged up. But at least it educates people about them.

I agree fully with Dracawyn. It dose make me miss the ole` fun croc hunter, Steve Irwin. I saw the videos and reports of his zoo where he educated people and spent time with the animals to ensune they were really living a life, not just using up one.

Yeah, he was a good guy. I miss him too. His death was just so sudden. I think it's good that zoos don't take animals from the wild anymore, or at least most of them don't. They're bred in captivity, so they don't know what they are missing.

:( I hate zoos and I love them. They always make me sad but at the same time I'm grateful to get to see animals I would never have gotten the opportunity to see otherwise... And even when I know the animals are well taken care of, it hurts to see animals that once filled us with fear reduced to our entertainment...

Yes, me too. I also know that most of them are bred in captivity, thankfully, and never knew a wild, free life. At least they don't know what they are missing.

Presumably. Genetic memory has a lot more power in it than some people might think. For example, I only have one obscure Scottish relative (Sarah McCleod) from way back when, but still every time I hear bagpipe music it makes me cry and/or want to go kick the crap out of the next British person I see. And there are also the occasional things that remind me of my Viking ancestry. Like, whenever I hear Ride of the Valkyries I feel the need to pillage and burn for the rest of the day.

That's quite true. Although, I can't ever say I've felt the need to hoard potatoes for fear of a famine, or sporadically carve myself a nice pair of clogs upon sight of some tulips. But hey! That's just me!

Well, let's see. You're Irish, right? Have you ever listened to Riverdance music and had a hard time keeping your feet still? Does your heart skip a beat when you see pictures of Stonehenge? Don't you ever just ache when you see rolling green hills next to cold ocean waves?
And then what was the other half? Are you Swedish or German?

Maybe with Riverdance. Stonehenge is cool, but my heart doesn't skip a beat. ^^ And I can't argue that rolling hills and cold ocean waves are beautiful. :)
The other half is actually Dutch.

Yeah, I don't know enough about the Netherlands to guess what your genetic memories might be. *shrug*

It's cool, but that's what the tulips comment was about. ^^ Oh, the Dutch eat applesauce with EVERYTHING! But I don't really get cravings for it......
