Poem by: ~Byrdwerm

Autumn is spinning the thread.
She has nimble little twigs of fingers
That roll the cotton back and forth,
Into a hypnotic rhythm as repetitive
As the white cloth she has made.
Autumn is stitching the outlines.
In short, calculated motions, she
Needles in a little sketch of uncolored
Leaves and blank sky and empty harvest.
Autumn is splashing in color.
She mixes dyes until her hands
Are stained and picks out spools
Of gaudy yarn. Her tapestry is of
Pumpkins and turkeys and apples,
And always, always, leaves.
Autumn is working her fingers to the bone.
She works until the cloth is filled, until
Her job is halfway done, until the leaves coating
Her thin frame are ready to shed.
They are shrugged off, and the trees
Do the same.
Autumn is walking the world.
She takes her cloth, and tears it up.
Then, she sprinkles the dust, one
Bit at a time, one handful, one grain,
And in this way she gives the earth the news:
Autumn is ready, this year.
She has nimble little twigs of fingers
That roll the cotton back and forth,
Into a hypnotic rhythm as repetitive
As the white cloth she has made.
Autumn is stitching the outlines.
In short, calculated motions, she
Needles in a little sketch of uncolored
Leaves and blank sky and empty harvest.
Autumn is splashing in color.
She mixes dyes until her hands
Are stained and picks out spools
Of gaudy yarn. Her tapestry is of
Pumpkins and turkeys and apples,
And always, always, leaves.
Autumn is working her fingers to the bone.
